To Pirate or not to PIRATE?

Post by Digi-Guy »

Just wondering what your thoughts are of Pirate DVD. The reason I ask is I overherd a conversation the weekend where a production person was talking to a collegue about copyright applications. Apparently some chap was selling copies of his films and when it all went to court it feel down on copyright application. The company in question had not filed for copyright and the guy doing the selling claimed he'd brought the rights previous and the case crumbled. Surely that cant be right?

Unless you have verifiable proof of ownership of copyright it means squat. Basically register all your content with the UK copyright service and you can sue the bollocks of anyone who infringes your copyright - without it you are fair game for the above scenario. It only costs ?40 for five years of registration too.

Hi again Jacque,

A question about the UK Copyright Service.

Would they handle (ie. accept and register) material up to hard core porn video?

Not that I do that, my material is solo girl up to "continental" stills photos.

Of course, I guess I could put that question to the UK Copyright Service themselves?

Cheers

I would assume they have a statutory responsibility to accept any material that can legally be sold under UK law, they're not there to make moral decisions ... in the same way the tax man doesn't mind taxing the profits from the Power Of The Pussy.

Interesting but has there been a case of a pirate being prosecuted as a result of copyright and if so where? Went to our local car boot today up on the M6 J2 and countless guys were selling pirate porn its quite shocking.

I'm sure Trading Standards will have somewhere - they have certainly been active near me.
