Bulgaria rocks
Re: Bulgaria rocks
in 1976 penthouse magazine run a article under the heading"never visit bulgaria"
Re: O/T
It is true - he rang up about the racism issues, but the host started asking why he lived in the UK anyway if he could live in Barbados, because given the choice most UK citizens would probably choose Barbados. The second part just came out in general conversation ... he actually ruined the points he had made initially by virtually contradicting all of them when it came to him as an individual - but you can't hold it against him for taking opportunities presented to him, because I think most people (including myself) would go against their certain principles if it means a better life in some way - justifying it by the fact they're only one person in a big system, so it doesn't really count.
Re: O/T
There's an interesting article here
It's a cheap place but seems rather polluted away from the tourist resorts. If you live in the countryside apparently there is a real problem with animal ticks (fleas etc.) due to life being based around animals and farms.
I don't think they've got broadband outside the main cities (Sofia / Varna) and it's a nuisance using PC's with Cyrillic keyboards. Varna has a Chernobyl style reactor that's not regarded as very safe by some experts ... but probably on a par with Sellafield. also it seems common place to have rationed water/electricity in a lot of the country - they just cut you off for so many hours a day.
There is also a lot of snow in certain parts Bulgaria during the winter ... and there can be severe flooding. I wouldn't attempt the language.
I suppose it looks an interesting place and life can only get better once they join the EU - although there's always room for trouble with 12.2% Muslims in the population. According to CIA factbook "Corruption in the public administration, a weak judiciary, and the presence of organized crime remain the largest challenges for Bulgaria! - and the country has a net migration rate of -4.3 migrant(s)/1,000 population, so you'll be helping by going the other way (but only a bit though)
In general you get what you pay for - it's cheap for a reason.

Me and Jim went snowboarding-please don't try and imagine jimslip on a snowboard please- in Bulgaria and all we remeber about the holiday was when we went for dinner in the hotel they had 3 plates showing what food you could eat....and they all involved beetroot and sausage meat! Needless to say the local pizzaria was packed!

Seriously, its a big step to take. Witness those TV progs. about making the move to another country.
I visited NZ twice, for 3 months and 6 months, before making the final decision.
