How do website know where I live ?

Some adult web sites I visit have text which says something like

Watch girls live from MYTOWN now (where MYTOWN is where I live)

One site that does this is (in the top left):


Anyone else get this ? and how do they do it ?

I have Windows XP with SP2 plus zone alarm. I also have a router
so my IP address should be hidden behind that.

Anyone help. I do not like the idea my home town details are available
(and who know what other details).

They get the information from an IP2Location database of which your IP registrar supplies the information for free, this will give the counrty of origin. So by looking at what IP ranges belong together from your ISP, it is often possible to determine the city for your IP even if no information is known about that specific IP.

It is not that accurate though - I am not anywhere near Brighton.

This is more common with cable users, as cable users are connected to a local loop, and ur IP will translate from

82.34.23.13 to 82.34.23.13.pc-foxtrot.lpool.ntworld.com

so the ip resolve will lead the person to liverpool, it can be more specific if you in well populated city with lots of local loops like london, can be tracked down to near enough harlesdon, tottenham, camdem whatever

But bigger ISPs like AOL well they will say ur located either in london at the central pipe or in the middle of the north sea, the same with other people.

Some sites are better than others for this. Some seem to get my location right (Northampton), others don't seem so good(London and some places I've never heard of).
