No problem. And yes, you are right, Cenobitez, that you can usually get away with a carrier bag. To be absolutely sure, the best way to do it is to buy something small in the duty free shop and then transfer your stuff from your supermarket carrier to the Airport Duty Free one before boarding the aircraft.
Ultimately, the airline restrictions on carry-on bags are largely about common-sense. If everyone takes too much on board, there will be no space to put it all. An odd extra camera case or carrier bag is easily stored under your feet, so nobody is very worried. If you tried to take 3 small suitcases on, which won't fit in the lockers (and I have seen many try), you will come unstuck. The key issue is to avoid alerting the check-in staff or the airline in advance. Once you are checked-in you can get away with almost anything within reason, as long as you are not carrying any restricted items, such as "extremely dangerous" nail-clippers, forks, cork-screws etc.
Another hint: If you are carrying any electrical items, such as laptop cables or camera equipment, don't put them in a locked suitcase, unless you are happy to find the locks/zips destroyed en-route. Suitcases do get x-rayed after check-in and most airports now have the right to break in to the cases without your knowledge. Also, never put anything remotely valuable in your suitcase. This applies particularly to America, where, in my experience, most baggage handlers and security inspectors damage and steal from suitcases as a matter of routine. For example, I flew to Miami recently, with a group of 20 people. On arrival in Miami, we found all 20 of our bags had been damaged and opened. Each contained a note from Miami airport security confirming that they had done so and were not liable for any loss or damage. All 20 bags had something missing from them, ranging from cheap T-shirts to valuable jewellery.

Dont forget to add Safty Pins and Paper Clips to that list
I was flying recently and ALWAYS carry what (john the webdeigner on here) calls a Housewife, which is basically a mini outfit repair/adjustment kit, that has a needle, cotton, safety pins, paperclips, hairgrips you know the stuff photographers, that your half way thru a shoot and realise u need, so i always have a few items, in the zipper part of my bag, on this occasion, a few paperclips (small ones used to hold clothing), a small safty pin with 3 safty pins linked to it, and 2 hair grips, man did i get hassle for that, airport security went nuts at me, i explained the situation and the guy was like "look il understand its something u always have and will forget its there, but you should have checked", so i was just like "ok sorry i didnt think of anything like that, i took the scissors, corkscrew, pocket knife, and other stuff out but didnt realise this was an issue", at this point i read a sign that said "We do not carry firearms of any kind" ummmm made me smile that people needed to be told this as if they would try then the security guy told me people DO try to take claypigeon guns and rifle club guns and and a pop star tried to take a handgun not so long ago.

A bit stupid for anyone to pack valuable jewellery in a case that's going out of your site ... then again people are stupid. I don't think all airport security is too hot, a bit hit and miss. I went through at least 6 airports with a Swiss army knife in my bag and it was never picked up on x-ray - I had forgotten it was there myself until one day I emptied my toiletry bag to get rid if stuff and found it at the bottom.

The frightening thing is that, before 9/11, American airport security were allowing people to take guns and weapons of all kinds on board, as a matter of routine. This is why they now have to make it so clear what is not allowed. I was once in a queue at airport security in New York, which was being held up by a man having a furious argument about how he has a constitutional right to take his gun on board an aircraft! Some people are just so thick!
I was chatting to a security guy in Florida, earlier this year, who said that they still confiscate an average of about 10 guns a day and countless hunting knives, despite all the warnings. So I suppose a few paperclips provide them with some light relief!
