Council Tax
Council Tax
Once again we read someone has been put in prison for not paying their council tax. Ignoring the rights and wrongs of the tax, I thought Deptors Prisons were abolished in the 19th century so feel it is a bit stupid, when we hear that there isn't room to bang up the tear-a-ways who make so many peoples lives miserable, to keep putting pensioners away.
Re: Council Tax
I live in Exeter so this has been "news" here for some time.
It does seem a little silly putting someone away for ?50 of debt.
You imagine if somebody went to court for shoplifting ?50 worth of goods do you think they would go to prison?
I don't think so.
The Court has allowed her to achive what she originally set out achive and that's to become a martyr and to give publicity to her cause.
PS Please note that there are many people in prison because they owe money. It just depends on who you owe the money to for that to happen.

Re: Council Tax
I may be joining her!
In August 2004 I had a house fire. From September 2004 until June 2005 I was in rented accommodation (paid for by my insurance company) whilst my home was being reinstated.
I told my local council what had happened and paid the council tax on the house I was renting. However, they are chasing me for a further ?1100 odd for unpaid council tax on my home!
The fact I had no choice but to live in what they laughingly call a "second home" doesn't seem to cut any ice with them. They claim I have to pay on both properties. F***ing c***s!!!
I look forward to seeing them in court.

Re: Council Tax
Bob
That sounds similar to the situation I've got at the moment.
I've been renting a property for the last two years as I had to move location for work (and have been paying council tax on this one). My other property is in another council tax area and has been subject to water damage twice (and an ongoing insurance claim) and because it's leasehold has been a f**king nightmare to sort out e.g getting access to the flat above my one. Because of this I haven't been able to either rent it out or sell it. But, of course, I'm still paying the mortgage on it!!
The council did, however, let me off paying tax until April this year due to it being unihabitable (I even got Environment Health in to prove my point) but then have turned round and said that I have to pay this year's even though the situation hasn't changed.
I pointed out that it was illogical that if I was still living in the property and using all the council's amenities, they would give me a 25% discount on the bill, but since no one is living there (or using the services) they wish to charge me 100%.
The council, of course, blames the government for the rule changes regarding unoccupied properties and that they have to charge. I have heard that other councils apply the rules differently.
I agree with you, f**cking c**ts all of them!!

Re: Council Tax
It is is even stranger when you see this in the news on the same
day.
The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have agreed
to cancel up to $55bn (?31bn) in debts owed to them by some of
the world's poorest countries.

Re: Council Tax
I to have a elderly relative in prison for his beliefs-he believed the security guard was looking the other way!
Re: Council Tax
They let her out tonight anyway.
Re: Council Tax
I had a similar situation after my father died. Until the house was cleared of all furniture I had to pay 100% council tax although my father had been enjoying the rebate as a single occupant.
