I always regarded Kiss as some sort of novelty act, rather than serious musicians. Big in America, just like Monster Trucks ... but they don't travel well.

Actually Kiss were big in Europe and the rest of the World as well. It's only in the UK that they weren't as big.
The likes of Priest and Maiden supported Kiss on European tours. They still managed hit singles throughout the 80's and into the 90's, plus they played at Monsters of Rock.
