I have just bought my first AV (Audio/Visual) receiver, a Yamaha RX-V357.
I have connected up the sound, and can now get my TV, Sky, DVD and VCR through the six speakers.
But I am having trouble understanding the benefit of putting the picture through the Receiver.
Currently all the devices (Sky, DVD and VCR) are connected to the TV via scart sockets.
What do I gain by putting them through the receiver ?

sounds complex,i have a 1999 fergerson tv and a vhs&dvd combined [04]
Re: Home Cinema Advice
What input is on the receiver? component jacks, coaxial?
If it is an optical input use it, if its component you won't notice the difference. Using optical inputs should mean better picture quality whereas using Scart or component usually means some sort of 'noise' reducing the picture quality.
In honesty though you probably won't notice.

Re: Home Cinema Advice
Bear with me because there are about 400 connectors on the back of this
thing so I am having trouble working out what they all are.
There are three "Component Video" jacks on the back, each with 3
connetors (Y, Pb and Pr).
The diagram shows a DVD player and Digital TV/Cable TV going into two of
them, the other shows a "Video Monitor" coming out. I assume by Video
Monitor they mean TV.
But there are also two optical connectors on the back, one showing
DTV/CBL, the other showing DVD. The diagram shows them connecting to
the "Optical output" connector of the DVD and the TV.
I am confused about these optical connectors. It says they are for
the "optical digital audio signal output jack on your component". Seems to
indicate you cannot get multi channel sound without connecting the DVD
using it.
Does not seem they are used to get the piture to the TV.

In fact here is a picture of the back of it
The only optical connectors are shown in the bottom left.

Re: Home Cinema Advice
Sorry guilbert I was confusing myself there. I went off on one about sound and you wanted to know about picture.....bollox....lol
Sound will always be better with optical as it is a pure digital signal. Multi channel is possible using Scart etc. its just not as good as optical.
Picture quality - Scart, Component and S-video
Scart is convenient and Component and S-video are slightly better quality. If you use a good quality Scart you should be ok.
