I can not believe the arrogance of the MPs who have put the rights of suspected terrorists above those of a five year old little girl riding on the underground to see her granny and who unfortunately is sat in the wrong seat at thewrong time.Despite what the police chiefs, the security services and the forensic scientists have said they all apparently know better.Good on Blair and Brown and this vote will confirm that the Tories and Lib Dems will be out of power for decades yet.I piss on them all..............
90 days Terrorist Detention voted down
Re: 90 days Terrorist Detention voted down
90 days wouldn't have made a difference in the recent bombongs ... since the police never suspected the perpetrators in the first place. The police are not to be trusted with powers like that as it's virtually 100% guaranteed they would abuse the power. Having time to assess the situation, I'd rather live with the threat of terrorism than give them more than 28 days .. a police state at the price of saving a few lives, it's not worth it. I'm glad they were defeated.
Re: 90 days Terrorist Detention voted down
The 90-day detention was a kneejerk reaction, and nothing good ever comes from that. Who's to say that that time in custody, without charge, wouldn't become part of the law for other suspects. It's not the terrorists' rights that are being defended, it's yours and mine.
For all I loathe the politicking surrounding this issue, the Labour rebels, the Lib Dems and Tories have got it right. Blair may seem like a grinning C of E minister, but under his premiership more and more powers have been given to the security forces, in the name of protecting us, than a right win Tory government would have been prepared to give. What is there of our precious democracy to protect if Blair has given our basic freedoms away to the police?
After July 7, he said he would make sure the terrorists did not win. With every armed officer outside our railway stations and airports, every stop and search warrant, every phone tap, they are victorious day after day. We win by preserving our freedoms, not giving them up.

What a load of bollocks from Nacho and Caractacus. All this 'basic freedoms' is bullshit, the police aint gonna lock up any and every Tom, Dick and Harry they suspect for 90 days it is the MAXIMUM time they said they need in extreme cases.
I'd rather they lock up a few innocent men for 90 days then lock someone up for 28 then they come out and blow the hell out of a building somewhere in the world.
Nachos qoute "Having time to assess the situation, I'd rather live with the threat of terrorism than give them more than 28 days .. "
Is the most dumbest if not roll-over and diest thing ive ever heard on this forum. Are you French by any chance??

Perhaps you would favour the US solution. Whisk them off to some undisclosed destination and keep them locked up for ever.

If I went off to Syria, opened a Cof E church and then preached hatred of the Syrian government and people and encouraged fellow Protestants to rise up and do violence in that country, 90 days without trial would be the best I could expect.
This country has always been well known for looking after immigrants, from Jews at the beginning of the 20th Century to Ugandan Asians in the 70's everyone has had the chance to come and make a life. Look at the number of Asian millionaires, they have worked hard for it but were given the opportunity. What none of them did was come in and start preaching hatred against their adopted country which a lot of Muslims are doing. You notice that the suicide bombers in this country and in Palestine are all young, where are the old bombers? They do not put their lives on the line, they hide in the shadows twisting the minds of the young to their bitter hatreds.
If someone either an immigrant or British born is a danger to me or my family, I want them locked up and if it takes 90 days to process them so what, better they are out of harms way. There is no need to worry about their welfare while in custody as the growth industry of "Human Rights" lawyers will make sure they are treated a lot better than we treat our old people while they are inside.
Generations of Brits have fought for the right of free speech but I get very angry when I see that right abused as it has been for the past few years.

Re: 90 days Terrorist Detention voted down
If it's used correctly I don't see a problem with the 90s, however I don't for one second believe that it will be used correctly. There's absolutely nothing to stop the government from using this to arrest and detain members of opposition political parties at election time or opposition MPs for important commons votes for instance. There's no limit to the uses of this as a political tool. People organising a protest against something the government has done could find themselves locked up without a trial. If they're willing to hold some 70+ year old guy under the prevention of terrorism act for speaking out of turn at the labour party conference, then I really don't trust them to use something like this the way it was supposed to be.
Re: 90 days Terrorist Detention voted down
If the case for 90 days is so strong, then why could the police/government not produce one single case as an example where a difference would have been made?
With the UK government and the police it's always a one way street ... they want to take liberties away all the time, but when something like this happens they want us to roll over and give them our support. They need to give a little as well.

I thought this was particularly interesting:
"The route to security is through respect for human rights, not violations"
Time for Tony to go.
