Blu-ray

Post by Jacques »

Looks like the format war has begun - Nero 7 Premium supports Blu-ray and not HD-DVD. Due to Nero's popularity is that a nail in the coffin for HD-DVD?

The tide seems to be turning Blue-ray's way. Most of the major players will be supporting it - apart from, most notably, Microsoft.

It remains to be seen. I think its going to be a bitter battle between Sony and Microsoft. Sony has very strong influences on all electronic media and entertainment....This should be interesting as the two companies play tennis with the consumers...Us.

Do you think the porn industry could influence the 'format war'?

If someone like Private (not a small player and lited on Nasdaq) and a couple of the other big boys backed Blu-ray would that have a major effect on consumers?

dead?

why it seems only yesterday that bushy-tailed business types were still warily, sniffing around any shiny discs, much in the manner of the querulous ape-men at the start of '2001 - a space oddysey' when they woke up to find a stonking great obelisk in their front yard...

Very good and interesting reading but I think I'll wait for the next obelisk too land in my pants before I give up on DVD

The entertainment industry ... Sony, Time Warner etc. see Blu-Ray and HD-DVD as a way of charging consumers over the odds and making extra profit ... in the US they were talking of $10 on top of the price of a conventional DVD, which would increase their prifit margin by $3. No wonder people pirate their stuff when their attitude is to scam the consumer if they can.

A trite cynical Nachovx but I do see your point. I'd prefer the term "milking it for what it s worth" to be middle of the road but then I guess it comes down to the same thing.

Some companies that produce porn are going the High Definition way but I wouldnt panic at all about DVD dying out over night. There are far too many people with huge dvd collections that will be resistant to change and this will effect the longevity of Blu-Ray which won't accept dvd but HD will. Blu-Ray is apparently much better...but then so was Beta Max to VHS.

This is not the first nor the last time that Sony has introduced new technolgy that will end up being a dead stick in the water...but Sony are powerful and financially sound enough to get away with it.
