It's nowhere near as good as the book, but the book is a classic. A good try from all concerned, though---and what a cast: Arkin, Voight, Benjamin, Garfunkel, Welles, Balsam, Sheen, etc.

I agree, it is a GREAT book but almost impossible to make into a film.

The book is not about the story but about the details of all the people, and
you just cannot get all that detail into the film.

For example, there is one inept character in the book, and his parents were
so deperate for him to be a major in the army they called him MAJOR MAJOR
MAJOR.

Of course he becomes a MAJOR so is called MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR. He
is so bad at his job that he tells his secretary people can only come in to
see him when he is NOT there. When he IS there they cannot come in.

Well in the film he is just called MAJOR MAJOR and it just isn't as funny.

The writer gives loads of background information to each character which is
very funny and much of that is missing from the film.

I remember one character whose father was a farmer who grew Alfalfa in
the USA.

The story goes that the government had too much Alalfa, so they paid him
NOT to grow Alfalfa.

With the money he got from that he bought more land to NOT grow Alfalfa,
so got even more money from the government.

So it went on till he had so much land he was the biggest NON-grower of
Alfalfa in the US.

(sound like the EU nowadays)

Very funny book but also very anti-war.

I decided I wouldn't watch this film as I had seen it so many times before, but then realised that i would be doing the film an injustice by not watching it again.

Catch-22!!!

Great film, incredible book

The shock of the flightsuit scene, and the aircraft raft scene, and naked Yossarian in a tree make it worth watching, if nothing else. Good film, but a shadow of the book.
