PC advice needed

Post by myson »

Hi Guys,

A lady friend of mine is looking to get herself a new PC and is looking at a Gateway GM5014B from Comet.

Can anyone offer any advice or comment about this PC?

Many thanks

I wouldnt buy from Comet :( not a computer at least, Pick up a few local papers, and nationals and you will see some Adverts for Dell, pay the extra ?100 and get 3 yrs home service :), and Dell Machines in my opinion are damned good.

I run 2 Dell Servers and 3 work stations and in the past many laptops, pcs and servers :), There Customer Service is very good.

With the business service, its same day repair, on my servers and I called at like 12pm and the engineer guy was at my door at 4pm and replaced the motherboard, job done didnt cost me a penny.

Is it this one

If so it is a very powerful PC, does she need that ?

If she is just doing internet and word processing then this is way over
spec. Like buying a ferrari to go to the shops. She will be paying over the
odds for a very fast processor when a slower one may do.

If she is doing other things then fine (video editing etc).

Few things to note:

It comes with Windows Media Center Edition, is that what she wants ?

It has a TV tuner, does she want that ?

The gateway site does not show a monitor. If one is included make sure it
is at least 17" TFT, better a 19" TFT. Dont let them fob you off with a 15".

It DOES NOT come with MS Office, does she need that (it does have Works
but this is a sort of "baby" office).

I cannot see it on the Comet web site, how much are they asking.

One other thing to note.

This PC is only sold through Comet, Currys, Dixons, PC World which are all
the same company.

I would be wary of buying a PC that is put through only one outlet.

Best to buy one that can stand on its own two feet in any marketplace.

Like the other person said, look at Dell.

They only sell online but are good value. They are always doing "deals" for
free delivery, extras memory etc so look for the best deal.

Search the web for "Dell offers". I found one that gave me 10% off the final
price just by putting in a code.

Agree regarding Dell: I've run a lot of Dells over the years from laptops to servers, and they're rock solid. Very reliable, which means cheaper in the long run.

The Current Dell Offers will CAIN Comet with ease, a 3ghz Dual Core process 250gb sta drive, 16x DVD-/+RW Drive, 1gb Ram, 256mb Graphics, and a 19 inch TFT Screen for a little over a monkey (?500), you gotta be insane to think Comet can beat it.

?299 for a 1.5ghz Mobile Celerron Laptop with 512mb ram, 40gb hard drive, and a 15 inch screen, and only ?50 to make that 1gb and 80gb :) You can beat that even with a novelty oversized big stick!

The DSG Group owns Dixons, Curry's, PC World and The Link, and Kingfisher own B&Q, Screwfix Direct and Woolworths.
