There was a searing indictment of today?s chav birds in the Sunday Times this week. Here?s a snippet from the article by India Knight ?

"The awful thing about all of this is that these proudly stupid girls never really win. They think it?s all a laugh ? the fighting, the binge drinking, the fags and the sex and the vomit. In some peculiarly misguided corner of their minds, such behaviour makes them popular, fun to be around, lively, exciting.

But the end of the story never changes. It hasn?t for centuries, and it?s not about to now. If you offer yourself up like a piece of meat, you get treated like one. It?s over by the time you?re 25, with only a sackload of psychological problems to keep you company. Why do young girls insist on believing it?s worth it?"

Pray, Sir, how does my highlighting an article by a respected journalist in one of the country oldest and most esteemed organs constitute me mocking ?the poor?? An article, by the way, on contemporary cultural and societal trends that I surmised would be of particular interest to the members of these esteemed forums - given, of course, that the article was focused squarely on younger members of the female population?

Also, haven?t you read the many posts I?ve made relating to my humble beginnings in the slums of the industrial North? The wasted early years in which, as a young man, I misguidedly subjugated myself to exploitation by capitalist fat cats? Haven?t you read about how, in my early thirties, I underwent a Damasian conversion to wise guy, geezer, purveyor of porn, and latterly it would seem, raconteur?

I beg to differ. Middle class people have always despised poor and working class people, but they have found different ways to mock them through the ages.

In the 60s teddy boys were the scum of the earth (at least for snobs). In the 70s it was skinheads, in the 80s it was Essex boys, lager louts, "Kevins and Traceys". Now it's "chavs" (although in the North it's scallies or neds in Scotland).

In Orwell's 1984 it was the Proles. Other times it's been navvies. If you're really posh you call them plebs.

This group-naming a way of dehumanising a group of people who snobs don't like - but don't want to admit they don't like, so look for excuses instead. Because nobody likes to just come clean and admit they're a snob.
