The class system - just another bizarre aspect of British life. Makes going abroad to places like Australia so refreshing.

It's not just a British thing. In LA I once got a bus down Ventura, then the tube to Hollywood for a walk around. When I got back people thought I was crazy catching busses! Only black people and hispanics get busses they said!

At least in the UK you can get an unemployed drunk and a middle class bussinessman on the same tube together. The french are as bad as us, muslim states have a very rigid class sytem as well as a few countries in Africa & India.

Humans always want to classify everything!

I used to spend a lot of time criticizing Islam on here in the noughties - but things are much better now.

Hierarchy is the key word here, stemming back to our bestial roots as primates where a fundamental sense of hierarchy kept order in groups. Every beast knew their place, and competition was allowed now and again.

We haven't moved on. At a social level we utilise hierarchy through imposition of classification and discrimination- it empowers the individual and members of a group 'know their place'. At a national level, democracies and dictatorships alike impose it mercilessly for their own ends, in order to control a nation as they see fit.

I DO laugh at the neds and the chavs- i fucking hate them, for the first time in 12 years of going out in Glasgow I got mugged by 4 of the wee pricks last week- for banter purposes. Essentially, I sympathise for their poor upbringing, wasted talent and vacant, lost souls.

To categorise, and revel in the fact that they may be idiot hicks and that we are clearly not, is a sign of a cracked, tainted ego which is in dire need of the mental equivalent of a Swedish massage. There is more to life than FEELING superior- and branding others on the basis of anything other than their own merits as PEOPLE, not race, class, education or creed- why not quitely aspire, and proceed with dignity, to our higher levels, chase our rainbows and thank christ that we haven't had the life they have had!

It is the individual sense of unjustified superiority, rampant ego, (and a smidgen of megalomania) that generates a dictator. Hitler- prime example. In today's more civilised society, this type of person 'writes' for the Daily Mail!! !adolf!

A bit tangential there- I'm not having a go at you Dibs, nor is what i said a personal attack btw, you are entitled to views, as am I! Just my 2p..........

.................as it was a bit of a rant, just my 104p.

I appreciate your viewpoint, and can see exactly what you are getting at.

However, I tend not to individually slaughter folk on the forum- there may be censure from admin and it's pretty 'poor form' IMHO- so, as opposed to apologising, I merely stated I am entitled to my views, extreme as they may be. Diplomatic cop-outs keep the peace: if only Blair heeded this axiom over Iraq. There is also the issue of the likes of Dibs, yourself and Caractacus being experienced and thus pretty formidable opponents! No, I'm not scared, but do I really need a flame war or an electronic inferno over an opinion, especially on a forum in which i tend to make jocular and light-hearted contributions?

I appreciate the fact there is 'rivalry' between you and the Dibbler, but despite your apparent mutual disregard, I feel there is mutual respect there. Fuck, you might both be the same person for all I know- you may be an Oxbridge graduate operating under two pseudos to take the piss out of us none-the-wisers! !wink!

Excuse me for sitting on the fence, mart, you are a decent fellow, but I'll keep in with you both. !love!

You rascal.

"I actually think OD is right about this. The article isn't about 'the poor' it is about an underclass."

You're a learned and perceptive man, Keith, and I'd further venture, a gent to boot. You seem to be aware of what is happening out there, on the street, while many others either have their heads in the clouds, heads in the sand, or just don't know what day it is.

Stay vigilant and spread the word.

"Still, the good news is that car jacking has gone up in middle class areas. Now that such crimes are effecting the very people who protect this scum, expect an immediate about-face on the plight of the poor, courtesy of our residential liberals."

Yes, brerbear, it'll be good to see the poncy tossers get a twating and a taste of what decent folks and pensioners now have to put up with on council estates throughout the land. In fact I've been perusing my local rag and last evening's edition carried just such a cheery tale of chavery. Yes, cheery in that those who got mugged, robbed, and twatted, were middleclass students! That'll teach 'em to be all poncy 'n' pretentious and presume to identify with the underprivileged and 'disadvantaged'.

Anyhow, it appears that two chavy street scumbags of limited intellect (one going by the name of 'Leroy, Barrington, Rarsclart, Arundel' or something like that) had been engaging on a mini crime spree - taking mobile phones and iPods off young teenagers, while brandishing a knife. Anyhow, they were so successful that they set their sights a little higher and waylaid two student couples in the town centre. They gave the idealistic young middleclass folk a dam good thumping, before reliving them of their mobiles ?n? laptops, then marching them (at knifepoint) to the nearest cash machine to 'tax them'. Ha, ha, ha! I don't think they'll be going to anymore 'Rock Against Racism' gigs for a while, eh? (Chortle, chortle, chortle). Hey, yer need a 'good news' story like that once in a while to cheer you up and put a grim on yer boat race, don'tcha?

Rivalry? Ha! Mart's no rival - I walk all over him most every day. Trouble is he just keeps on getting up.

"mart, you are a decent fellow,"

Ha! I'm sure he thinks he is, but he's regularly peevish, vindictive, and unpleasant. He reminds me of 'the school sneak' or 'snide'. Always wanted to be in the cool boys gang, but just couldn't help being mean, sneaky 'n' snidey, and was thus marginalised. Which of course made him even more mean and resentful.

OK, we've talked a bit about side issues. But could someone now comment on the original subject - India Knight's article in The Times. What do you think of her observations and concerns?

Sorry Dribbler, perhaps I should lie down in future......Don't hold your breath.
As for being vindictive, who is the one always trying to boost his pathetic ego by boasting his superiority over some other segments of society?
You are like the kid in the school playground who thinks he wins an argument by shouting the same nonsense over and over and over again, ad nauseam.
Why don't you admit you have both a political and a commercial agenda?
