WEBMASTER ON THE MOVE

Post by eroticartist »

I wonder if anyone has any ideas how to get online(with broadband) in the remoter parts of Europe when carrying a laptop? I need to update my website and get my email.

Best chance is a cyber cafe with WLAN - dial-up is achingly slow when you're trying to download lots of emails with attachments.

You might get better results with Onspeed, never tried it myself though.

Hi Fred,
Brilliant !happy!found a hotspot a few hundred miles away but I will find nearer ones. Do you need a service provider to get online? I have AOL at the moment and I am wondering ifI could keep it on the move?

You don't need a ISP in a cyber cafe, but if you dial up AOL directly you need to check out this link for access codes etc:

Hi Fred,
Thanks for all your advice. Another question. What if I want to use my own laptop?

Same information is valid - you need to enter the access code & numbers in a new dial-up setting for the location you are. It's a bit fiddly to set up but can work OK, I've even gone online via bluetooth through my mobile. Slow as molasses compared to broadband though.

You might want to get yourself a mobile connect card. It's basically a pmcia card with a sim card and aerial. As long as the country you are in has a 3g mobile service provider you'll be able to use your laptop anywhere that your mobile phone will.

While, not broadband speed, 3g works at 386kbps, (around that mark, I left vodafone a while ago!), dial up was 56K. So it's still quite quick.

Hi Nasty,
I suppose that it is expensive?

Fred,
If I find a hotspot do use my ISP or the hotspot's own ISP. Sorry I am confused but I hve not used a hotspot before. I understand what you say about G3 phones. Thany you.
