One cannot yet be sure, but it seems M. uttered some derogatory, maybe racist words at Z. Such ways are common in Italy and Spain, and probably elsewhere. There was once a Bulgarian player, whose name I don't remember, who used to do just that. This is by no means an excuse for what Z. did, but, as he is to be investigated by the FIFA, I think that M. should himself be punished. Rooney, Zidane lost their temper; C.?Ronaldo, Figo, Materazzi and others got scottfree. That's not fair.

What I don't understand is that if you did that on the street you would be arrested for GBH, but do it in a stadium in front of tons of people.....and you come out a Hero.

He must have been severely provoked to react like that. I reckon Matarazzi should face a lenghty ban after it has been found out what he actually said to make the best player anywhere in the world in the last 20 years to react like that!!!

Racial abuse is also illegal in many places - almost certainly in Germany. If that was behind Zidane's action, then I'd say Materazzi deserved more than he received, and needs a fine and a lengthy ban by FIFA.
