Yeh exactly and as a (then) 16 yr old into banned films I was expecting gore, along with most of the population when it was finally rereleased.
Like I said - the original grows on me the more andmore I see it, but the remake was great for just sheer brutality
Was the remake better?

You`ll be pleased to know that remakes are being planned Robocop, Predator, Mary Poppins , Porkys and clash of the titans. Jesus does no one in Hollywood have an original idea?
Remakes rarely work, look at the recent Pink Panther and The Producers

I have some faith in Miami Vice.
Michael Mann makes good movies and as he created the original series he at least has a clue what he is doing. I just hope its better than the series which was cheesy.

I think the 70's remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Donald Sutherland was much better than the 50's original. It's rare though, I mean, Sly Stallone in Get Carter? Fuck off! He's a big man, but he's out of condition.
More on the way
And meanwhile we await the American version of The Wicker Man. . . . .
And according to IMDB, the taut, subtle, well-acted, five hour BBC drama State Of Play is being adapted for a big screen American audience. My hopes are not high.

The 1970s King Kong was a lot better than the black & white original, and from what I've heard the recent remake is a good film - better than the second version?

"The 1970s King Kong was a lot better than the black & white original"
In some weird, alternate universe, maybe. "Get your hands off me, you male chauvinist ape!"
I watched the original about a year or so ago, and it pisses on the 1970s version. Haven't seen the Jackson remake yet

Re: Was the remake better?
The real problem in that case is that hollywood don't seem to understand which films could/should be remade and which were just fine as they were. The best remakes are usually of films that werent that popular first time around and the story deserves more attention. Having said that...Ocean's 11 was a great film - what was the original like?
Personally I'd rather they all just took the idea of the original....reworked it a LOT and called it something else and release that instead in most cases. Granted you'd get a "its a lot like X film" but as long as justs the basic premise that remains I'd prefer that than just being doomed to endless remakes.
Bigger question - is no one writing/reading great books any more ?
I just want more B-17 or Avro Lancaster type films
Saving Private Ryan type films do very well - why not remember the flyboys too? Id pay a lot to go see a new film around that plot

Re: Was the remake better?
i think these remakes are bettere than the originals;
thomas crown affair
attack of the fifty foot woman
cape fear
Bedazzled
the fly
hills have eyes
king kong (for the effects)
the mummy
oceans eleven
13 ghosts
a muppets christmas carol (many films made but the muppets did it for me, oh, the alastair sim version was good)
the worst remakes for me are,
war of the worlds
atalian job
charlie and the chocolate factory
the lady killers (shameful, utter crap, worst film tom hanks starred in)
lost in space (not a proper remake as based on tv series)
thunderbirds (also based on tv series)
