Does anybody truly believe that after space travel, mobile telephones, F1 technology, military technology etc etc, we cant produce a car that will run without using petrol? because I dont, and I dont mean a hybrid type thingy, I talking about a vehicle that will run as well as a petrol driven motor, be it electric or water driven, truth is, it would cripple the worlds economy, I,m also sceptical about a cure for Cancer, I,m sure there is one, but think of the population explosion, and the jobs that would be lost, or am I being a tad cynical with that one.....

I totally agree with you on clean energy. Looking at how much energy that can be produced from 'one' atom these days then I'm sure it can be done. I think it's not the 'energy' thats a problem, it's more the 'stability' of that energy!
As for cancer, it's a little harder. Most cancers are passed on through genes. This means that cancers aren't caused by viruses or bacterial infections. A lot of people are opposed to genetic meddling though, but given time, science will conquor most cancers easily. Once the chromosomes -that make cancers more likely to develop- are identified, if allowed; scientists shouldn't have a problem eradicating cancer from future generations. Genetic meddling for the prevention may come before the actual cure though.

Re: Technology and stuff.
not strictly true, most cancer in the wetern world is caused by lifestyle
eg
lung cancer - smoking
bowel cancer - poor diet
others can be caused by viruses such as some cervical cancers for which there is now a vaccine
true some are genetic but these are mainly limited to breast cancer
A persons susceptability to cancer may be genetic but I think there is a long way to go before gene theray can prevent most cancers

Yeah, people with certain genes are more 'susceptible' to develop certain cancers, thats what I was referring to.
I don't think it will be too long before prevention is possible though. Comparing a 95 year old smokers genes -who never developed lung cancer- to a 35 years old smokers genes -who did develop lung cancer wouldn't take long for a computer of the future to identify the certain genes that are at fault.
Give it 10-15 years.....

Depends on how long public opinion, religious pressure, and governments hold science back I think.
Talking to my biology professor about this exact subject last year and he's pretty confident that it's not too far away. It depends if the money goes into this line of particular research. My aunt has just survived breast cancer so I hope so too.

Sam, I am talking about right here and now, I am sure there is a cure for Cancer of all types!! but like nuclear technology, you and I as mere mortals are not going to know about it, because the times not right yet, same with the non petrol car.
Good job I know all there is to know about Teabags.

Oils expensive though Lizard. Normally I'd be inclined to agree, but if a country found another cheaper/cleaner way of transport & power wouldn't that put them at a disdinct economic advantage over countries relying on arab oil?
Maybe countries with massive oil reserves might keep it secret like Saudi Arabia, USA, Russia but I'm sure if a Japanese, Switz or British scientist found a better way we'd have known about it. Or it woulda been 'leaked' to the media somehow.....
Of course, we'll never know for sure!

Re: Technology and stuff.
There were so many rumours about cars that could run without oil and petrol that at least one of them must have had some substance. The conspiracistas would have us believe that the oil giants bought the technology and promptly buried it.

T'fuck with anyone holding genetic science back. It's so vitally important that any religious or political nutters holding it back need a good kicking. This is an area of research that will, in future, free us from the tyranny of the genetic lottery. It will eradicate untold suffering and misery from future generations, make them much more efficient, more intelligent, and more attractive. Consequently, they will be able lead much more satisfying and fulfilling lives. So, all in all, I reckon, ?job?s a good ?un.
