What damge and wear and tear do cyclists cost?
Apart from a very small proportion of cyclists annoying the small-minded amongst us, what damage to roads, pavements and the environment does cycling do? Motorbikes, Cars etc are all propelled by engines and the results produced are far in excess of the physical exertion invested, cyclists are travelling on the own steam. In suggesting this, Mr Livingston is appealing to all the drones in cars that he has previously attacked time and time again and they are duly taking the bait. No wonder this country is in the state it is.
How's about this idea - we all do what we want but give the state 100% of our earnings and accept a token allowance from that? That way everyone is equal and we can rest in assurance that all our money is being spent oh-so-wisely by our friends in Westminster and their associates in the legal profession!
They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

No one is seriously suggesting taxing cyclists, as far as I'm aware. What is wanted is them to behave themselves and act like any other piece of traffic on roads.

So I mind them being able to move through queues of traffic to the front when there is a hold-up? No. Does it bother me when they ignore junctions and ride out in front of oncoming cars, or decide that it's someone else's problem to see them in the dark? Bloody right it is.

Yes, admittedly there are ppl on bicycles like that, but NOT ALL of us are like that.

Cenobitz,
Cyclists should be given ?200 per year because they don't use polluting fossil fuel and help the environment also by keeping themselves fit they are less of a burden on the NHS.

Caractus,
Why should cyclists be treated like "traffic" when they don't have engines? Surely they have more in common with pedestrians?

Those who ride out into oncoming traffic, thinking they have the right of way, cause they can zip through small spaces quickly, or it's not their responsibility to be seen in the dark are MAD.

Those who ride down the PATHWAYS, cause they can, are fucking annoying. As a Cyclist myself, I have really got annoyed after nearly being hit by Cyclists while walking down the pathway in a Shopping Precint, No Vehicles, Cycles, Etc are supposed to be allowed in the "special zones".

I'm not having a go at cyclists per se, just at the selfish and moronic ones.

There are chapters in the Highway Code that apply to them, whether they have an engine or not. They are quick to complain if car drivers don't give them enough space, or fail to see them. Respect is a two-way street.

Incidentally, I do know a number of people who have been knocked down by cyclists (myself included, when a child), and it can be quite painful.

When it comes to lack of consideration, though, drivers will always be miles ahead of cyclists. (But that's an entirely new thread).

Caractacus,

Of course there are bad motorists and cyclists but the thousands of people killed every year by motorists is a slaughter that would be unacceptable on any battlefield. Notwithstanding the pollution and disease from exhaust fumes.
