That's very true Dave. Political correctness is one of those horrible American phenomena that's found its way across the Pond (along with ambulance-chasing lawyers, serial sueing and "positive discrimination").
I was just pointing out the "Tom & Jerry" thing being very similar to what the Soviets did by literally airbrushing out of films people or characters that they didn't approve of and pretending that they didn't exist.

Re: Tom & Jerry censored - for smoking!!
You are, of course, exactly right. In the Soviet Union under Stalin everything the leader did not like including music and art was banned and if Stalin took a particular dislike to a work, then the producer of that work was in danger from the NKVD. It does have modern parallels.
Re: Tom & Jerry censored - for smoking!!
DavidS I get tired of your using the "political correctness" line to attack anything that offends your rightwing agenda. Usually I cant be bothered to respond to your offensive posts.
I was trying to point out that the story was about one particular company's decision not some Stalinist governmental plot. But of course thats the way some people want to represent it.
I saw a spokesperson for ASH interviewed on the TV news last night and she said that it didnt signal some draconian back censorship of older material.

"constantly pouring cold water on interesting threads by implying they are not true."
Perhaps you would care to cite some examples?

Ever heard of "the thin end of the wedge", mart?!
And anyway that's the whole point - they ARE censoring old material. And what's more they're doing it voluntarily. What kind of a signal does that send out?! Sounds to me like the ASH spokeswoman was talking complete tosh.
Once people start objecting to things because it "offends" them (and remember that this action resulted from just ONE person complaining), then it doesn't usually take too long before others start jumping on the bandwagon, and before you know it you've got a "pressure group".
After that it's not long before do-gooder, bleeding-heart MPs take up the colours as well, and the next thing you know legislation is being drawn up by the government to outlaw something else.
Or are we to take it that you - a frequent stalker of what is essentially a porn forum / reference site - is actually not troubled by creeping censorship?!

Paranoia reigns on this forum for some people.
And yes, I am in favour of some censorship.

I am not a prolific poster on this forum or any other, so I don't know how you can suggest that I have a right wing agenda. Sometimes there are threads which are perhaps a bit over the top, but they stimulate debate, which you, I am sure, would welcome.
