When you see something so often, your brain/body gets accustomed to it, so it NO LONGER affects you, hence alot of police officers can deal with horrific death scenes, without puking their guts up every 10 seconds for the next 3 months, the same with coroners in morgues, etc.

Well, all I can say is that I enjoy my dose of smut as much as the next bloke, but when push comes to shove I'm a normal adult of sound mind and no matter how much porn I'm "exposed to" (as the Government and anti-porn campaigners like to call it - as if it's some harmful disease or a lethal form of gamma radiation) I'm NEVER going to go out and start raping women as a result.

BDSM and similar aren't my thing in any case, but ditto if I were to be "exposed to" so-called "violent and extreme" porn (whatever that may be) - I'm not going to go out and strangle anyone.

In short, I know where to draw the line.

I think the same applies to probably something like 99.999% of the general adult population, and consequently I object to anyone telling me ("for my own good") what I can and cannot watch, access or download - be it politicians, the police, a government-appointed censor or some self-appointed moral watchdog.

And anyway, these people are only human themselves. What makes them any less "corruptible" than the rest of us as they go though all this porn, picking out the bits that they deem "unsuitable" for the Great Unwashed?

"Aaaaaah", goes the usual counter-argument. "But that still leaves 0.001% who WILL be corrupted by it".

Well, all I can say in response to THAT is that these people are probably already unstable in some way in the first place, so will probably end up offending anyway - with porn or without "exposure" to porn.

Although this particular piece of legislation doesn't affect me personally because (a) I live abroad and (b) the type of material it's aimed at isn't my thing to start with, what I do find troubling is that it could be the thin end of a very oppressive wedge of "creeping censorship" (I may not live in the UK any more, but I still follow and care about what goes on "back home").

For example - some woman gets raped and / or murdered and the perp says "porn made me do it" (and I'm not even talking "extreme" porn here).

Said woman's mother or some other interfering do-gooders (remembering the Longhurst case) then embark on a vigorous anti-porn campaign - ably supported by the Daily Mail. And the Government - ever eager to pander to pressure groups and invent new crimes & offences - introduces yet more anti-porn legislation to curtail personal freedoms still further. Before you know it, the UK will be back to the dark days of the '70s and '80s, with the demand still there but with supply & distribution driven underground and back into the hands of the criminal fraternity.

As far as I'm concerned, the only area in which the Government has any business interfering is (for obvious reasons) child porn. NOT when it's porn between consenting adults for consenting adults.

Hi Planet,
He was really anti porn as well. A right wing authoritarian. In Mein Kampf he talks of, cleaning up the billboards, cinemas, theatres and newspapers of the sickly sweet smell of modern eroticism. He thought that such decadence and immorality would weaken the masterace.!adolf!
Mike Freeman.
