Just lately I've been listening to a lot of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and the stuff that came from that stable like Herbie Hancock & Quincy Jones, and though it is a different kettle of fish altogether I've also been playing a bit of 60's UK trad like the Bonzo's & the Temperance Seven
They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

Big band jazz like later years Count Basie I like. I love jazz organ especially if it's smokin' organ jazz. Some jazz with a funk fusion is good too like early Kool and The Gang, Funk Inc., Jimmy Smith and Grant Green, Richard"Groove" Holmes, Eddie Harris and Grover Washington Jr. When you grew up in the states like I did in the mid to late 70s music was the meesage for me.

There was a program on BBC4 a couple of weeks ago about Herman Leonard, one of the great jazz photographers. He lived in New Orleans and hurricane Katrina destroyed his lifetimes work. He went back to see what he could salvage and found that jazz was dying in New Orleans, really quite a poignant documentary.

Worth a look.

The thing I like about jazz is you put it on and it's great to have a lazy afternoon of shagging to - try Bobo Stenson Trio's Serenity.

Now I never thought as jazz for background music to "shag" to but I guess it depends on who's singing or playing it. !grin!

I would've guessed it was dying before Hurricane Katrina. I do know that if it weren't for Reaganomics and George Bush Sr. cutting education spending there would be a lot more black young people in the inner city playing instruments instead of rapping and singging.
