"...and I would prefer to see all non-informed opinions being excluded from politics altogether..."
Isn't that a contradiction in terms? To me that implies that politics includes informed opinions - I don't bloody think so!!
Like Marcus says below, they only say what they think we want to hear so they can con us into re electing them and only do whatever furthers their own personal careers - they couldnt give a fuck about anyone else but themselves.

With respect, what the hell is "population studies"
This is the kind of thing that is mamiing a mockery of cociety today. When youve got it, what the hell do you do with it?
I do not question your obiously good intentions- but where does it leave the drunks (harmless) like me who only want to just fuck, drink & be peaceful?

Re: Claire Short - Question Time
Thing is Jon, porn would be a lot LESS harmful if it were taken from it's kind of archaic 'taboo cupboard' those in power like to keep it in. While it remains a largely 'underground' phenomenon, it has the potential to be a lot more influential on those that might use it to exploit their darker sides. I am not aware of any research that links 'what we see' with 'what we do', however it does strike me that human nature can be drawn to the forbidden and that more easily influenced folk may find it a source of fuel to their fire. Bringing porn to a place where it is widely accepted that consenting adults are just doing something enjoyable for themselves and will be enjoyed merely by other consenting adults will undermine this feeling of empowerment that porn potentially can result in. I'm just thinking as I type really so forgive the spontaneous stream of conciousness.
I disagree that the product can be generalised as 'harmless' as I think there are issues of harm both to those who watch it and to those who are involved in it, as there are in any job anywhere in the world. Dealing with those problems are of even more concern considering the mass consumption of pornography and Claire Short's answer is to announce she hates it and swiftly move on to more important matters like how much money a member of the house of lords spends on wallpaper. How is that helping anybody? It fails to help those of us who'd like to see greater freedom and liberalism, and it fails to help those who may be being harmed. In Claire Short's world, nobody wins.
In general I agree porn is relatively harmless but you must surely concede that it has an ability to harm if the wrong material falls into the wrong hands, and being swept under the carpet it is a place where I'd imagine a lot more people involved in it are harmed one way or another then if it were in a more open and ethically transparent place where regulations can be introduced to allow greater acknowledgment and proper working conditions for all involved. In much the same way as the IUSW is doing by joinng a major trade union and representing sex workers in other areas of the 'sex industry' in this country.

Re: Claire Short - Question Time
....much more long-winded than my own rant, but probably more joined-up thinking.
I've been away watching 'South Park' for the last 30, the best episode ever: they managed, pretty much, to expose the hypocrisy of the entire planet.
Nice one lads.
Eric Cartman for President !!!
He's a Fat Asshole, just like me.

Re: Claire Short - Question Time
Marcus, I more than respect your point of view concerning "harmless drunks, who just fuck, drink and be peaceful(I'm a stereotypical student for Christ's sake!). But we live in a society where money is damn important, so I had to study something!! Population students don't wanna change the world, or even care about the world (Fuck knows I don't!!), we just like looking at how the rest of world live, and Claire Short helped us out a bit by making this data available.
I dream of being a harmless drunk, who just fucks, drinks and be's peaceful, but we all need a job to help us attain that lofty status in the world of vice.

Re: Claire Short - Question Time
No, I disagree. I was sad enough to be watching BBC Parliament last night and was very moved by an elderly chap who was making what seemed like his first speech to the house (his hands were shaking and he seemed very nervous). His speech was about victims of stroke. Stroke is responsible for 13% of deaths in women, 8% in men. It is the third largest killer in this country, past heart disease and cancer. The man delivered a lengthy and eloquent speach about his serious concern for sufferers and the lack of resourcing the government is doing.
He was speaking to three people. One was the speaker, the other someone on the front bench who HAD to be there, and one other MP. One MP. One MP gave a fuck about this. Out of hundreds.
There ARE people with genuine principles in parliament, people who have carefully considered their view and won't just jump through the hoops of party whips and spin doctors. I grant you they are few and far between, but they exist, so I do not accept what you say.

......everything you say applies to politics in general: However, C. has an additional agenda: you're male, so therefore you're not entitled to ANY opinion.
Equality?
Hah!!

Re: Claire Short - Question Time
Matt, re-read that 1st para: is it possible he himself was a sufferer?
Just a thought.
The rest, bang on.
I have met, in the course of my overly-long life, many committed councillors/parliamentarians. the trouble is, the System doesn't give them a voice, which is why we end up with riots.

Re: Claire Short - Question Time
I totally agree with u Matt. I shouldn't have generalised by saying it is harmless, because some of it blatantly isn't. But surely it is fair to say that the vast majority of consumers in this country use it for peaceful, recreational purposes and nothing more.
There is of course the immoral minority out there...... but then again, there always is isn't there? (please excuse my insane ramblings).
But yes I was wrong to generalise and should have been more specific.
