WINSTON CHURCHILL ON ISLAM - A QUOTE FROM 1899 (Aged 25)
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.
A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.
Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing
faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."
Sir Winston Churchill -- The River War,
first edition, Vol.II, pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co.,
1899).
Churchill On Islam
Re: Churchill On Islam
The great man foretells the future once again. It's a fact that any culture that subjugates 50% of it's population will also sacrifice 50% of it's talents and intellect. This is why predominantly Muslim nations are undeveloped and years behind the west in terms of distributed wealth for their people.
Re: Churchill On Islam
The Great man would weep to see how far we have fallen in the 46 years since his death.!sad!

Churchill thought Hitler was a OK bloke until the late 30s.

He admired Hitler. Churchill wasn't a great or popular leader, and he had nothing against Nazism. He was a great war leader, no doubt, but remember the British electorate voted him out in a Labour landslide after the war finished - he wasn't loved. For most of his life he was a right wing non-entity. So let's stop trying to rewrite history.
"Basing his claims on Churchill?s memoirs, hundreds of biographies and government papers recently released by the British Public Record Office, John Sampson asserts that the rotund prime minister was a dangerous man who admired Adolf Hitler and prematurely led thousands of British citizens to be slaughtered at the hands of the Nazis."

Well having read your link, I would have thought that as John Sampson is a revisionist, it necessarily follows, that it is he who is trying to rewrite history!
Further, if Churchill was such an admirer of AH, did he not have a rather strange way of showing it, would he not have rather gone along with the idea of allowing AH to carve up Europe and Russia, leaving Britain to look after her own Empire, with the two leaders getting together for an occasional tea party at Berchtesgaden a la the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

When Hitler began harassing commies, Jews and gypsies, Churchill and most of the British establishment quietly approved. After all, it was what most Conservatives stood for. It was only his invasion of Poland that upset them, not his domestic policies.

So you'd have wanted Churchill to declare war on Germany because of Hitlers 'internal' affairs? If so, then the recent Iraqi war was justified, regardless of the lack of 'WMD's'.
My guess is that Churchill was being a politician, and 'being' political. In other words, he was being as polite as he could (until the invasion of Poland). It doesn't mean he liked Hitler.
