I always reted Richard Harris as head and shoulders above almost all his peers, apart from some of those already mentioned of course. :)

All good contributions. Perhaps I should have said "living" UK actors, or Sir Alec would have been first choice. Superb in The Ladykillers, Lavender Hill Mob, Kind Hearts And Coronets and particularly The Man In The White Suit, as well as the lesser-known Last Holiday. If his Fagin is particularly memorable, bear in mind that it was deemed anti-semetic when the film was made (not long after the end of the war).

For sheer effortless acting, however, just watch him at work (given the pace of the drama, "in action" is inappropriate) in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Leading a stellar cast, he still dominates when Richardson, Hepton, Reid, Bannen, Bate, Bennett et al are firing on all cylinders.

Ken Stott is a very fine actor who doesn't seem to give any bad performances and always keeps my attention when on screen, something not easy to do!!

I have always thought Richard Griffiths is someone who deserves more credit. Sheer Class.
John Thaw was also very good as was a young Phil Daniels when he first came along in Scum, Quadrophenia etc........and the cunt is doing EastEnders now.
Of course, I will always mention Ray Winstone. STILL the fucking daddy!!
