Just becaue they're "Ready" doesn't mean you're going to have to take them up on it, PT.
High-def is about 4 times the resoltion of current televions...although talking in "lines" doesn't really come into it with LCD and Plasma screens....more to do with pixels I believe.
And although HD broadcasts may well become more popular in the near future (and hopefully less expensive) we are a very long way from a similar situation to the big analogue to digital switchover.
I just helped my Mum and Dad buy a new LCD tv (which is hd-ready) and a new DVD player (NOT HD-DVD or Blue Ray) The DVD player cost me ?80 from Richer Sounds and I connected it up with a "component" lead....which can only be used on Plasma's or LCDs and the picture was stunning!! No hi-def necessary!
I'm sure they're current set-up will see them out.
Now I have seen hi-def pictures running on large screens...go into any Richer Sounds....and it has to be said the pictures are amazing.....they were playing Spiderman and Pirates Of The Caribbean....BUT....at the moment to get a the TV service costs a couple of hundred quid for a box plus a tenner a month on top of what you already pay....and there's still a fairly limited service. And Blue-Ray and HD-DVD players are still hideously expensive and frankly most of them are not that good.
I'm sure digital will be good enough for most people for a few years yet....at least 'til the cost of hi-def comes down considerably......and of course once you start with it....you're going to have to buy all those DVD titles all over again!! Because The Lord Of The Rings trilogy or The Matrix or Star Wars just won't do in rubbish old digital...will it?!!

Film is film - scan it at 4000 dpi and you get a 4000 dpi image, scan at 40,000 dpi and you get a 40,000 dpi image. The problem with these will be the digital sfx, you can't add information that is not there. So it will depend on the resolution of the sfx as to whether they stand up on HD or not.
