I got to agree with you, Terry, I thought the man was a bleeding genius as well. We grew up listening and loving the music that winged it's way across the big pond.
Stax, Tamla Mowtown, Philadelphia, Okeh and numerous other record labels that we new off by heart. I purchased my first James Brown record when I was about ten ( Sex Machine) It knocked me out! and once you learned to dance to it, and not look like a moron you could really get to know the birds better.
I am an ardent soul fan always have and always will be.
I do wonder if it has ever occurred to some of the other forumites that if it wasn't for the likes of James Brown breaking through with a new and revolutionary type of music ( first hit was in 56) They would'nt be arguing over Pink Floyd/Black Sabbath/Bachman Turner palmer Iommi...
I like all types of music though, a bit of 'Floyd' goes down a treat every now and then, open your eyes and ears and try not to be so dismissive some of you.
My favourite band is 'The Rolling Stones', and guess where their influences came from,not to mention Mick Jagger's dodgy dance steps.
On a final note, on the album 'Dark side of the moon' one of the backing singers was a black American girl called Doris Troy and in her own right was also renowned and brilliant soul singer, I've got some of her songs on vinyl that she recorded before she sung for Pink Floyd.

otis redding was a great singer i recall when i was 11 yrs old loving the dock of the bay,also the atlantic soul was good too eddie floyd,arthur conely etc.
