Hey all!!
Breaking news on BBC,that it looks like the execution is going ahead some time in the next 24 hours!! Gotta be honest I am suprised never thought they would actually go through with it. I know all the arguments for doing this and belive that it is the right course of action, but does any one else think that the shit will hit the fan after? And he will be remebered as a maytre (I just know i have spelt that wrong!!)
Cheers

Re: Saddam Hussein
I personally wanted to see him rot in jail and that his execution is wrong for a number of reasons. However if Iraqi courts want him dead we cannot argue with their decision.
Not too sure he had a fair trial though. I would have rather seen him tried in Switzerland or something.

[admin]Edit facility?[/admin] !happy!
I always had the feeling Saddam's hanging wouldn't be considered as martyrdom amongst most Iraqis, but if evidence comes out that his trial was unjust, and he was killed without a fair trial, then he could be viewed as the persecuted rather than the persecutor.
I hope the Americans have been intelligent enough to foresee such an occurrence, if indeed they know his trial wasn't holy just.

Re: Saddam Hussein
I think executions (despite my moral stance on it) is to swift and final. I like the idea of a long prison sentence. I dont think anyone can imagine the mental hell you go through langusihing in prison with nothing to do.
Its interesting to see how many people have come to look at themselves in retrospect over such a long time. Some come to their senses and realise they fucked up big time and others just hate society and never see the wrong in what they have done.
Executions are just a rapid way of dealing with vengeance but once the person is dead it never really adds finality and the pain never really goes away because the memory of his atrocities will live in in the hundreds of lives he has touched. If anything there is a poetic justice to seeing a man locked away like an animal, stripped of all his dignity slowly wasting away. I think this is a more fitting end. Long and slow.

Also cant help but feel Saddam was a quick fix solution because America havent got Osama, America never really cared for how dictators really rule their countries so long as we can get access to our oil instead of trying to style it out like the conflict had a more altruistic side to it.

I cannot agree with you having ended my post with 'holy just' instead of 'wholly just'! !oops!

Nah - he doesn't have many supporters. The civil war in Iraq has nothing to do with Saddam anymore. This will be almost a non-event.
