This country is going to the dogs
They?re trying to take away Camden markets and the Astoria. Now this...!
Historic music venue Hammersmith Palais, venue host to the likes of The Clash, U2 and Sex Pistols, is facing the threat of closure after 90 years.
The London venue, which has provided a launching pad for a host of breaking bands over the years, looks set to be demolished and turned into an office block and restaurant.
US based developers Parkway Properties, who own the Palais, have put forward the conversion proposals which will be considered by Hammersmith and Fulham Council by January 24.
If the development is approved, it will spell the end of one of London's most historic music venues.
Over the years, the Palais has played host to thousands of bands and artists from the likes of Glenn Miller and Bill Haley to the Rolling Stones, U2, The Pogues and Sex Pistols
The venue is also obviously known for The Clash track 'White Man In Hammersmith Palais', written after hearing a series of reggae artists at the venue.
What is WRONG with this Country? too many greedy bastards, trying to make as much money as they can, no doubt it will become a block of flats that the working class wont be able to afford.
Maybe someone in the record industry should start something along the lines of the National Trust for places of Musical Interest.
We are no longer a Nation of shopkeepers but a Nation of Property Developers. The false economy based on property prices under Blairs? regime is tantamount to a pyramid scam with the few at the top making and the many at the bottom losing, problem is it's too late and will take a massive recession (watch this space v. closely over next 18 months) or a whole generation to rectify the financial imbalance.
Several Pubs in our town centre area have been demolished and replaced by a cul de sac of Barretts? houses it's so wrong.....
Dont think anyone studied the implications of buy to let mortgages just per usual saw the $$$$$'s!!!

Re: Hammersmith Palais
Is that the same place called the Hammersmith Odeon? Yeah it's a shame that a lot of of places that was once part of cultural and even neighborhood history is being replaced by "greedy developers" building housing only to turn them into condominiums or building shopping malls. It's happening here in the states as well and it makes me sick to my stomach. Our farm land is disappearing because they want to build new housing, industrial complexes etc. But if good jobs are moving to Mexico, China, India or wherever who's gon live in them $150.000.00 to $300.000.00 houses?
Re: Hammersmith Palais
different places, hammersmith odeon (now hammersmith apollo) is just round the corner from the palais

Yeah. It depends on where you live in the states. If you live in the big city or suburbs house prices are pretty steep. When you get to the small towns they get cheaper. I'm pretty sure that those prices I gave can be higher.
Re: Hammersmith Palais
Ace I find your polemic very hard to argue with.
They turned the 'Cavern' into a National Treasure, I'd argue that the Palais is far more important in the history of music in this country.

Re: Hammersmith Palais
The property developers do have a lot to answer for - it's not as though they want to change the use of the Palais because it's losing money - it's pure greed on their part.
I remember seeing an article about a year or so ago where Wessex Studios in Highbury (where the Sex Pistols and King Crimson, amongst others, recorded) had been converted into flats - at least the structure of the building remained (because it had been a church)
