Ermmm...

In Through The Out Door...Planty had just lost his kid and was not in 'hot cock riffola' mood. So the band proved that they could move into AOR as well as they had done rock/blues/metal/folk, et al. Hot Dog is not meant to be great- its a pisstake of a Texan bar band they had seen. All My Love is MOR and meant to be-a eulogy by Planty to his little boy.

J-Tull.com....some great tracks on there. Tull on fine form- but its not 1975 any more. The title track and Wicked Windows will stand the test of time.

Never Say Die...as circumstance made the Zeppelin move to AOR, so the Sabbath were moved by circumstance to move to Zep-territory in the same year. Competing with punk made everyone try something new and with Ozzy hanging onto band membership by his fingertips, the strains show. For technical and logistical reasons, the album was made day and night over a short period in Toronto; with the band splitting for some songs into the two units they had been pre-1969. Big Bill Ward proves on some days he could be the best singer in the band, their jazz influences pop out and Tony Iommi glues the whole lot together. The title track is more Zeppelin/Stones than Sabbath and proved their diversity- a ballsy rocker, it still led to a hit single and a TOTP appearance. Failure most bands would kill for!

And yes- I have all three albums; and all three get played....

And nice to see another one Alice. I certainly agree with you about 'I'm your Man' - Jazz Police does let it down but the rest of the album is superb. What do you think of 'Ten New Songs'?

On the theme of the original thread here's my 10 Desert Island Albums

HIghway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan
Bringing it all back home - Bob Dylan
Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan
The Songs of Leonard Cohen
I'm your Man - Leonard Cohen
New Skin for the Old Ceremony - Leonard Cohen
Aqualung - Jethro Tull
Sweet Baby James - James Taylor
Led Zeppelin 2
Love Sick - Bob Dylan

Respect Colonel, you know your Sabbath. So much bollocks gets written about Sabbath and part of it is that that "Last two Ozzy albums are no good" which is utter shite. Never Say Die to me is a fucking great album in which the band pay homage to their roots in jazz and blues and there are more musical ideas within that album than most bands manage in an entire career. The production is excellent and the playing is outstanding. If people don't like this album it's their loss but it's a crime that many people may be put off giving this album a listen because of the negative press it attracts.

"In Through The Out Door" features "In The Evening"....enough said. I also thought that the J-Tull.Com album was bloody good too, Ian Anderson is the bollocks!

Exactly, mate!

In these two Zeppelin and Sabbath albums, they showed that they Weren't Afraid. So new ideas came out, were used, tried out and duly explored. Carouselambra is pure samba; and Fool In The Rain a marvellous demonstration of both Planty's vocalisation ['down-town'] and of Bonzo's complete mastery of drums.

Never Say Die is really Big Bill Ward's finest hour [to date] although Tony is in there as grand co-ordinator. You will know they had to work back-to-back; and why they had no option but to use Bill as vocalist on at least one session. I'll always treasure the TOTP performance where for 3 minutes, Sabbath becomes a duel between him and Ozzy performing Never Say Die.

Compare that with U2. Every fucking album the same since 1979 and always the intimation that they feel that they are kings of the world. A group of more smug tossers you will be hard pressed to find.

I have the Genesis album too. It is their weakest- but again, they tried to keep the show going- and credit should be due for that.

I like it and I saw them live at Earls Court on the tour. One thing is for sure and that is that Ray Wilson has a great voice and I'm surprised that they never carried on with him, I'm sure the next album would have been a cracker.

Are you going to see Iommi/Dio/Butler/Appice?

Heaven And Hell? Where/when are they playing?

I'm going to see Robert Plant And The Honeydrippers in Dudley next month. All Fifties/Atlantic Records RnB.....see- never afraid to experiment...a long way from hard rock and from African or Celtic melodies.

Obviously there are loads more albums I love listening to but 10 essential ones for me are:

WHAT'S GOING ON - MARVIN GAYE
FOREVER CHANGES - LOVE
PET SOUNDS - THE BEACH BOYS
THE SONGS OF LEONARD COHEN - LEONARD COHEN
EXILE ON MAIN STREET - ROLLING STONES
RUBBER SOUL - THE BEATLES
EQUINOXE - JEAN-MICHEL JARRE
BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS
THE RETURN OF THE SPACE COWBOY - JAMIROQUAI
MOON SAFARI - AIR

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

Nice one, the legendary Dudley JB's no doubt. I love the majority of Robert Plant's solo stuff and I admire the way he does exactly what he wants to with his career.

If you check out www.iommi.com or www.black-sabbath.com you'll find out all the latest news on the "Heaven And Hell" tour. At the moment I think it's just the dates in Canada that are confirmed. I would love to have seen Bill Ward on the tour but it's going to be awesome.
