Nice one! Having devoured the books, magazine articles and documentaries about the classic rock bands such as Zeppelin, Sabbath and The Who what strikes me is how much fun they had and how every day was a riot for those guys. Add to that the money, the shags, the enormodomes full of fans, the mansions and the sports cars and you've surely got the ultimate lifestyle. It just doesn't get better than that!

I'm not as keen on Laughing Len's work from the 80's on (I'm not saying it is bad or poor, just different and for me not as good) but his songwriting is still excellent, his voice changed so much it's hard to be it's the same artist. I had heard of him but not heard much by him when someone lent me his "Greatest Hits" album when I was 17 (1991) and I was immediately enthralled. I play Songs Of... almost daily and haven't tired of it and never will, everything about it is so right and his accoustic guitar playing is breath-taking at times. I love Songs From A Room, Songs of Love and Hate & New Skin.. too (Songs of Love & Hate is a bit heavy in places though!)

The ultimate rock and roll anecdote has to be about Keith Moon.

That's the umpteen crates of brown ale/Jeff Beck/hovercraft/naked teenage blondes/SS uniform/Nazi salute/A44/farmer's fields/private fishing lake/down to the pub anecdote.......completely unbeatable.

For weeks afterwards, Jeff expected to get arrested the next time he visited Oxon.- I don't think he ever drank with Moon again....

We are certainly singing from the same hymn sheet as they say. NOBODY can ever match the mighty Keith Moon as a rock'n'roll legend. The "Dear Boy" biography is the best rock'n'roll book I've ever read by a mile, you can literally open it at any page and be amazed at what he got up to. It's superbly written too. The end is particularly moving wherein the author writes of meeting Keith a few weeks before he died.

My favourite Moon anecdote is probably his arrest in Canada wherein upon his arrival at the cells Keith, sporting a smoking jacket, declared, "I think you'll find I've reserved a suite."

There's a lot of classic Moon clips on You Tube that are well worth a gander.

If REALLY going to a Desert Island, I think 'best ofs' and 'greatest hits' may be best, as they give a good overview of your fave artists!

I'll just plug in a few of my favourite albums 'off the cuff' for the time being; I'll forget too many though. This is waaaaaaaaay too difficult.

In no particular order:

1. London Calling- The Clash;

3. Roxy Music- Roxy Music;

4. U2- The Joshua Tree;

5. Joy Division/ New Order- Substance; (cheating wi' two there, almost the same band just without Curtis, but i'd burn them on the same disc, hehe)

8. Teenage Fanclub- Bandwagonesque;

9. The Queen Is Dead- The Smiths;

10. Super Furry Animals- Songbook vol. 1.

I know, where are the Beatles? Floyd? My beloved Electro nonsense? Belle and Sebastian? The Pixies? THE FALL?? REM? !confused!

They are in my head- like Andy Dufresne said in 'The Shawshank Redemption', "Music is up here", *points to the napper*. Wouldn't need to take them!

Nice choices flaps .. good shout for 'Bandwagonesque' and SFA. You might have to skip 'Sloop John B' on Pet Sounds as it will remind you of the shipwreck and if you follow it up with 'Isolation' by Joy Division you're asking for bother .. mind you, it's not on 'Substance' is it .. but you get my drift.
