Sometimes it does but the majority of time it doesn't.

Without trying to repeat myself then most of the time it is a bluff as they have nothing on you and think they can pressure you into confessing. Sometimes even when you're not the guilty party.

I had a similar thing to yourself happen in that years ago I was asked to make a voluntary statement which I refused and they threatened me with arrest if I didn't.

Fucking arrest me then was my answer and they did on my doorstep the following day although I said nothing when interviewed and was never charged.

I would estimate that I have been asked to make a voluntary statement on approx 12-15 occasions (I can't really remember as it's just to long ago) and I called their bluff back every time. So to only get arrested once out (12-15 goes) of it I think says it all.

I've never been there so I can't say but British Custom Officers are complete wankers.

For example I got pulled at an airport a few years ago now, with the old "can you come with me". "Why" I said. "Just come with me". "Why" I said again and this went on for a minute or so.

"Am I under arrest" was my next line. "Just come with me".

"Am I under arrest" I repeated which was greeted with a blank expression.

"Then you've no right to detain me then. Goodbye". I then strolled out of the door.

The prick had no idea what to say or do. Of course he could have arrested me so it was a calculated gamble which could have backfired on me but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of just metaphorically bending over for him.

So it's plain obvious what to do.

Only you know if you're innocent or guilty. If you're innocent then you can refuse a statement and be as difficult as you like, calling their bluff. if you're guilty then calling their bluff and being difficult just makes things worse for you (if they can indeed make something stick).

Absolutely not as it doesn't matter whether you're innocent or guilty.

If you're guilty then let them prove their case. Don't prove it for them by opening your mouth and digging yourself a hole. Make the lazy copper get off his ass and do his job.

Either way keep your mouth shut even if you think they have evidence against you then as I said I'd let them prove their case. Others might do differently. I wouldn't.

We have a copper who drinks in our local pub and like most coppers he gets too pissed and when he does he shouts his mouth off.

The regulars will often ask him about local crimes and I can remember him saying something like "We've arrested somebody and my governor says we can get a conviction".

"So you've got the guilty bloke then" is my reply. "We've arrested somebody and my governor says we can get conviction" is his reply again with a stupid smirk on his face.

This roughly translates to "we've arrested somebody and we don't give a shit if he's innocent or guilty. We reckon we can nick him".

My point is that the old bill often nick people and don't care less if they're innocent or guilty so if you get off when you are guilty then what goes around comes around in my opinion.

It's the system. They fuck with it so why shouldn't you.
