Your American friend will find him/herself at home here... every fucking high street has a McDonalds, KFC and/or Starbucks. Every youngster is seemingly clothed from head to foot by either GAP or Nike. Most cities now have drive-by shootings. Gangsta Rap and hip-hop has permeated our culture to the point where few English people under the age of 25 actually speak English anymore.
And our levels of obesity and stupidity are quickly catching up with America. Everybody now drives to "out-of-town" supermarkets, and in some special places they even have huge shopping centres crammed full of cheap crap goods, with dysfunctional families spending a whole day there as a "family treat"!

Yes, your friend will feel right at home here!

There is a big American community here in London, and they're as welcome here as anyone else. I've never heard of a serious anti-American incident anywhere TBH. They will encounter people who want to talk about Bush and Iraq, inevitably. That might get a bit tiresome, but there's no reason for them to think they'll get a hostile reception.

I've got 2 good American friends in London and they seem quite happy here.

Britain's never been true to its stereotypes, neither is any other country. You've been watching too many Mary Poppins films.

Dibble, you've proved yet again that Brits love whinging, and yes American visitors will have to put up with a lot of that from people like you.

Other than that, as I've already posted, Americans are welcome visitors to this country and should have a lovely time.

'You know it makes sense.' Does it?

'The middle class, in colloquial usage, consists of those people who have a degree of economic independence, but not a great deal of social influence or power. The term often encompasses merchants and professionals, bureaucrats, and some farmers and skilled workers.' (Wikipedia definition)

Up to now you have never explained to us why all these people are 'privileged', 'pretentious', 'ready to slag off America', etc. etc. - in short: Untermenschen. Perhaps this is the right moment to share your superior sociological knowledge with us?

Don't worry about Dibble. He hates working class people (or chavs as the local snob slang goes) just as much as he hates the Middle Classes. I'm not sure if he likes anyone at all - the Queen, perhaps.

Sounds like your friend might be a bit paranoid. Sure he didn't get us mixed up with France? !wink!

You think Dibble is one-dimensional?
I think he is three-dimensional. He likes himself, the Queen and Ms. Thatcher.

Bob, you make the mistake that Britain equals London or the South of England. It does not. If the Americans visit Scotland, Wales or the North of England they may find cultures which do not have right wing ideals as the norm. Britain does not end north of Watford or stop west of Reading.
