Hello peeps
Did anyone see the program last night on C4 at 9pm about global warming and what human intervention has to do with it? I am very interested in the environment and how humans impact the planet, and I was taken back by the content of last night's show.
The show basically showed how the Earth's temperature is controlled by the sun and not by the amount of CO2 in the air. It seems that CO2 does very little to effect the atmosphere and has basically no impact on global warming.
It seems the truth is that the world gets hotter and colder naturally and humans are not able to either control or contribute towards this.
One very powerful message that came through was about how using natural resources can give a country mighty power and how by limiting the resources that the third world gets keep them oppressed. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
It seems that the government has a lot to do with funding the research into global warming, and as with everything it all comes down to money. There has been a mass hysteria in regards to recent weather events and people putting global warming down as the cause.
Before this program I didn't even think there was another side to the argument, however the caliber of the talking heads and the scientific evidence was overwhelming.
I certain believe now that there is a lot more to global warming than simply just the issue of the world heating up. It has much more to do with money, power and oppressing the third world so the west can carry on living the way they are.
It is weird, but after watching that program it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I think it is very important to recycle, turn things off at night and to conserve our natural resources. The resources running out is a much more real threat than global warming.
Anyone else see it and what did you think?
Matt

Yeah I saw it and a hell of a lot was actually missed out like how Krakatoa (sp?) changed world climates and how we are still recovering from it.
The argument for both sides isn't yet finished but anything that saves money in your pocket (energy efficiency etc.) and cuts down on pollutants (food chain) can only be a good thing. The problem as touched on in this program is Governments attitude to the "lesser mortals" and how they can implement a "green tax".
Certainly food for thought.

Yes i saw it and if you read some of my earlier post i have always maintained that global warming was more of a natural thing than man made but i still think we should try and cut down more on pollution but not with a green tax, mind you this programme was a bit one sided you could get a different lot of scientist and make a programme that counters this theory.

Re: The program about global warming on C4
It's not hard to understand really.
Most scientists who talk of global warming have never been afraid of the planets warming, only the speed of it's warming compared to the planets history.
Hasn't the Earth warmed up as much over the last 150 years, as it did the previous 15-18,000 years? Basically since the industrial revolution. I don't think it's coincidence.
Coral reefs are dying faster than new ones are appearing. Forests are being cut down faster than being re-planted. Deserts are expanding. Sea levels are rising.
Actually rising sea levels isn't really such a big deal on it's own, but adding in deforestation which means the top soil being washed away into the sea, and we'll end up with less land, and mostly desert land at that.
It's typical of governments to take advantage of such things though, (higher taxes, keeping 3rd world economies from expanding etc) but that doesn't mean everything's hunky-dory.
All I know is that the most knowledgeable and intelligent people on Earth, from all walks of life have been telling us since the 70's about global warming.
This was before oil companies started bribing scientists with money, before conspiracy theorists decided to make programmes on the matter, and before governments thought it would be a good idea to get more tax out of their citizens and keep the 3rd world down.
We're having an affect. How could we not?

Did you see the show?
" Hasn't the Earth warmed up as much over the last 150 years, as
it did the previous 15-18,000 years? Basically since the
industrial revolution. I don't think it's coincidence."
Between 1940 and 1970 the earth experienced cooling, at a time of post war indutrial boom, when emissions were growing exponentially, and totally unfiltered and unregualted. So emissions into the atmosphere up, temperature down. Doesn't fit in theory, so is dismissed by the pro lobby as an anomoly.
The graphs that show a correlation between CO2 and temperature are used by the pro lobby, (as shown on "an uncomfortable truth" by Al Gore) tend to leave out one inconvienient fact. temperature rises preceed CO2 rises by about 800 years. Again, doesn't fit the 'acceptable facts' so gets forgotten.
"All I know is that the most knowledgeable and intelligent
people on Earth, from all walks of life have been telling us
since the 70's about global warming."
The ones who get the air time have, many have been providing an alternate view but do not get heard.
And pre 70's the rage was global cooling and the prediction of a new Ice age.
" We're having an affect. How could we not?"
There is no hard evidence that man-made CO2 emissions are having an effect, its simply theory presented as fact, adopted by trendy types because it fits their anti-usa stance, and those who question it are treated like holocaust denyers.
I'm willing to be convinced either way, but the evidence available to me at this time leads me to believe its a natural occurance, rahter than man made.
Just some of the points addessed by a very interesting show.

Who made the programme, who were the scientists and who paid for it?
I can construct a theory about the motivation of the naysayers but what is supposed to be the hidden agenda of the global warming/climate change/finite resources lobby?

Re: The program about global warming on C4
There was a period of global warming, more significant than the present one thus far, in the early centuries of the second millenium (around 800 to 1000 years ago).
I can vividly recall that we were being told we were heading for an Ice Age about 35 years or so ago.

That's the point Mike. Just think how much the Earth has warmed up in 'that spark.'
