No offence carl but it is possible to copy the NTSC dvds.
I have got a samsung 709 with macro disabled and can copy through the scart to a cheap aiwa vcr.I think most vcr's will only play NTSC but a few will actually copy them.

Its also worth bearing in mind that there are "hacks" available to enable even cheap DVD players to play discs of any regional code. Often it is as simple as entering a few digits on the remote whilst depressing a certain button on the DVD player. I am sure Joe King could provide a link to a site with these hacks listed. I had a URL but lost it.
