Living in rural Cumbria, oop North, I see hundreds of 4x4s every week. However I can see where the anti Chelsea Tractor brigade are coming from; in a rural area, no problem, in a narrow city side street, a real pain in the butt. Farmers tend to stick to workhorse like trad Land Rovers, city dwellers go for big engined X5s, Landy Sports etc to carry around one 3 year old and their Yorkshire Terrier, none have towbars............
I am real car nut but cannot see the appeal of an X5, unless you go off road, when the wide ultra low pro tyres will be useless, you would be better off with a turbo diesel Merc 320, Audi, Volvo etc. All have the cachet, all more ecionomical and have better load capacity. Ever tried lifting a heavy object into the back of Landy? It is a bout a foot higher than an equiv estate car.
Are 4x4s a nuisance or not?

Most definitely. They're the same as all these 'people carriers' and those type of cars. Why are they called people carriers when you rarely see more than one person in them?

I have had an X5 then a X3, they were both fantastic off roaders, plus having the benefit of comfort and a great sound system, I still have a SWB Landy as I live in't countryside it will get you most places but it's a dog of a vehicle after having had several Land rover,s they are just a workhorse really, there is very little thats attractive to them. Dont letthe looks of a X3 X5 fool you they are fantastic off road even with WP tyres.

Re: Are 4x4s a nuisance or not?
I get bored with the narrow roads argument for not having 4 x 4's in cities, there are a lot more narrow lanes in the country!!! In the county I am constantly having to reverse until there is a passing spot, and I very rarely have to do the same in town, and on both occasions it makes no difference whether it is a 4 x 4 coming towards me or a mini, if the lane or road is too small the lane or road is too small!!!
Carbon emissions taxes are fine, they are fair, and it is not just 4 x 4?s that get clobbered, but stop saying they should be taxed because they clog up roads, Chelsea tractor driving people that clog up roads will clog them up regardless of whether they drive a 4 x 4 or an estate car (which is longer, and just as wide, so in theory even worse) or a fiat. Teach people how to drive properly!!!!

Something other than narrow road argument.-
If you are parked next to a "Tank" you can't see thru the bloody things when reversing back out.
I hate returning to my car to see one has parked next to me. I then have to squeeze into my car, then gently reverse out blind hoping after a few angry hoots that someone will stop and let me out.
They are a dam nuisance.

Re: Are 4x4s a nuisance or not?
there fine when they are driven properly.........................................................when the bloody people driving them clearly shouldnt be driving them - women on the school run!
thats not being sexist just an observation - women usually cant drive them and look unsafe when simply turning a corner - now surely there argument for having the damn 4x4 is because they feel safer, but how can they actually be safer if they cant drive the car properly and are therefore MORE LIKELY to crash?!
And its not just women, why do people in 4x4 and generally any BMW feel the need to sit inches from your bumper regardless of what spped you do - you drive at the limit there on ur ass, u drive over the limit there on ur ass.........then you do what i do, you drive 10mph under the limit just to fuck em off!
and then when they try to undertake, u simply drop down a gear and dont allow them too! Afterall its wrong to undertake!

It really is just a case of willy waving in public and the jet set tarts love them because they tend to feel superior looking down on their "subjects" from their lofty position, you can almost guarantee that it is the Horsie Types that drive them (well apart from Lizard).
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?
