Your partners e-mail system may have been hijacked.

People are maybe using your partners email system to send out spam.

This is why she is getting so much returned e-mail.

Much of the spam we all get is from "ordinairy" peoples PCs that have been hijacked.

You ask why the spammers do it.

Well if you send out enough spam you will always find some idiots who will buy whatever you are trying to sell.

It may be fake viagra, dodgy shares, or whatever, but there are always just enough people who will take you up on your offer.

And of course sending out emails is free, so no cost, it is all profit.

Bastards.

Hi Guilbert

Thanks a lot for our info but we are both on the same laptop here in Italy and are on dial up through a mobile phone. I don't get much spam but she gets a lot labelled UNDELIVERED MAIL and it is sent from all different email addresses that are gobbledegook. We have a firewall and McAffee virus protection.
We both have webmail but are on different servers ie hosts.

The spam is selling nothing!

Puzzled,

Mike.

Spammers have many tricks for getting your address, and this "undeliverable mail returned to sender" thing is just one of the tricks they use to try to get you to open their junk. Just delete it and block their address if you can.

Failure notices for usually start with "MAILER-DAEMON"

Jacques,
Thank you for the advice. I can't block their addresses because there are hundreds of different ones each day. Also most of the m are not entitled MAILER-DEMON but "undelivered mail subsystem."

Blocking thier address is useless, as they aquire a new address each time they spam you...ie 1o9806738@whatever.com, then the next time it will be a different set of numbers.
The only thing to do is to set up a new mail account even on dial up you should be able to have at least 10 accounts, just go into outlook and click accounts, then add new, then delete your olde account, or even better, use this web based mail account it's free.

My opinion is that the spammers probably haven't hacked into your email account.

There are many bulk email programmes (I have used one to send out newsletters to registered users - not spam) and all you have to do is add any email address to the send to, return to and send errors to boxes.

You don't need the password for that account and there are free versions of several types of this software.

So somebody could go and use that bulk email programme at an internet cafe and all they need is a valid email address (e.g. mikefreeman@hotmail.com) for the send to, return to etc etc and the SMTP internet settings which you can usually find via internet explorer then hey presto it's a spammers delight.

There is even an add on facility where you add a plug in which sends you an email when somebody opens a mail so you know the email addy has been recieved. This was something like $10.00 for 15,000 emails.

The spammers can't be traced and you get all the shit in your Inbox.

It's a good piece of software if used correctly but a pain in the arse if it gets into the wrong hands.

This is my opinion as to what's probably happened although I'll bow to somebody else superior knowledge.
