At least some of the writers were aware of the resemblance between the Federation and the US. From the darkest (and best) of the Treks, Deep Space Nine, this piece of dialogue between two alien characters:

Reading somewhere the precis for Ashes To Ashes. Woman DCI from today has accident, wakes up in 1981 with Gene Hunt and co. Something- I don't have the exact quote- about making use 'of the reports left by Sam Tyler- who won't be appearing'.
Now stop just there. So she is having the same inhabitants in her dream/coma as Tyler? And between 1973 and now, he leaves reports? WTF?
So I don't think he dies. But where he is and what is the world/place that he is now in is anybody's interpretation.

FWIW, I think Sam was in a coma and was dreaming about 1973. In the final scene, he hears on the car radio that they are losing him, and then the girl from the test card switches off the picture, I think we can take it he dies.
From what I can gather about Ashes to Ashes, a WPC must have somehow read the notes Sam left for his counsellor when he appeared to have recovered, and this implants the idea of Gene Hunt in her mind, so that when she too is run over, she finds she's on his team in 1981. A bit ludicrous I suppose, but you've always got to suspend your disbelief to a certain extent to enjoy any sort of drama.
If I have read it right, this implies that Sam preferred to go back to an imaginary 1973 and die, rather than live in the Blair's Britain of 2007. He may have a point there...

I never really saw any of this show apart from the last 15 minutes last night, but it looked pretty decent and might seek out the dvd, surely the follow up to "Ashes To Ashes" will be "Dancing In the Street" ... fuck me I better copyright that Mr. BBC!!

PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

Interesting that John Simm wasn't sure that Sam got back to 2007. Suicide then- an even braver ending to the series than I had imagined. And owing a lot less to The Prisoner than many people thought or expected.
