Ebdon's money-driven style of play is a disgrace to snooker as an entertainment sport.

I hope he gets whooped.

The Road to the final.

Post by fudgeflaps »

Quite a championship we've had!!

Note that I placed a ?10 bet on Maguire to win at 25-1- he got to the semis.

Round one:

Where we were expecting match of the tournamnet, Ding was a little intimidated by Ronnie and got destroyed 10-2. A couple of cracking nailbiters, the most notable of which was the battle of the legends, Davis v Parrott. A see-saw match, Parrott went 6-3 up after the first session; Davis rallied to 6-6, and then we were left with a 9-9 cliffhanger........... and Parrott edged it.

Shock of the tournament was delivered by Graeme Dott, who decided not to turn up.

Efficient starts by Maguire, Selby, Carter, Higgins and Robertson. Unconvincing rounds from Hendry and Ebdon.

Round two:

The majority of these matches were quite one-sided, with the eventual winner taking their place in the quarter finals convincingly. Selby, Higgins and Maguire caught the eye with their heavy scoring.

The exception to this was Robertson- O'Sullivan. Robertson, playing superbly, had a tricky pink with the rest at 10-10, and missed it. This being the turning point in the match, Robertson's head went down- if he dug in, a decider could easily have been forced. However, the best player in the world at present went to take the match 13-10. Match of the round.

QFs:

All eight players comprising this round were playing magnificently, and the line-up done the tournament justice- it is a shame that the defending champion, Dott, and Neil Robertson weren't part of it. The tournament is set up rather excitingly at this stage.

Maguire and Higgins look ominously good- both winning well, they meet in the semi-finals; both are playing well enough to win the title easily. Again, pity they have to meet in the semi.

Murphy pulls off a spectacular Houdini act to advance over the World Championship stalwart, Matthew Stevens 13-12........ and Selby shows true mettle to come through by the same scoreline against the resurgent Ali Carter.

SFs:

Higgins - Maguire: nothing can separate the players in the early sessions, with heavy scoring and big breaks aplenty...... Maguire chipping in a lot of centuries. Maguire takes the lead at a crucial stage and is looking good: 14-10, 15-13........... Higgins uses all of his experience and grit to take it 17-15. He is looking good......... he has the breakbuilding, the safety, the experience and a phenomenal all-round snooker brain to now take the title for a second time, 9 years after his first in 1998.

Murphy - Selby: A similar script to Higgins- Maguire!! Both players inseparable, both playing well. Murphy goes 16-14 up, Selby is two down with three to play......... and shows immense bottle, skill, poise and nerve to triumph. His interview afterwards shows a character who is both precocious and mature beyond his 23 years......... I like this guy.

THE FINAL:

Higgins has all the experience- he has done this before. When he is focussed, he is unstoppable...... the only thing that may hinder him is the enormity of the occasion. I feel he may want the titlte MORE than he did first time round, and if things don't go brilliantly, his head may drop as it can be inclined to.

Selby has been a revelation- he has all the shots, is calm, determined, gritty and a heavy scorerr- his safety and table cradft is superb too; he can almost match Higgins on all of these fronts.

However, Selby has had a few nailbiters which may have sapped his energy- the 13-12 qf and the 17-16 semi; Higginsd came through relatively fresh, and has had the extraa night to recover.

I think, however, Selby wants the title more. I do also think that Higgins may have too much for him- both do make competitive century breaks with ease.

Higgins.

18-16.

Enjoy!
