My own view is that controlled immigration can be beneficial - but the current immigration free-for-all that exists in the UK does more harm than good and is definitely getting out of hand.

So while the Daily Mail (and others) do perhaps sometimes sensationalise things, they're not just "making it up". There is a real problem, and it needs addressing.

And I think that the view expressed by WZR here - namely that immigration and so-called "ethnic diversity" can only be forces for the good - is Cloud Cuckoo Land wishful thinking, to be honest.

There needs to be a serious clampdown on the piss-takers and freeloaders, and there need to be strict immigration quotas along the lines of those that exist in places like Australia and Canada. It works there - why shouldn't it work in the UK?

I doubt though that anything radical will ever be done, because despite fine words and occasional token hand-wringing, when push comes to shove few politicians have the guts to actually do anything truly effective about immigration, out of fear of being branded "intolerant" or even "racist".

On top of which even if the political will was there, no doubt the all-intrusive EU would have something to say about it, and the UK's ever-growing "human rights" industry with its army of tub-thumpers, campaigners and lawyers would have an absolute field day.

Does "Immigration" apply to citizens of the EU?

No, but the EU don't care as most 'new eastern Europeans' head straight for the UK.

If Switzerland had the same immigration problems at their borders then I'm guessing the EU wouldn't be so keen on new 'eastern block' countries joining up.

Funny that.

On the ball. The Mail is filth.

Here's a good target for you- the Nazi BNP. Fought off last night by anti-fascist activists and the salt of the earth voters who supported them.

And all that pub talk crap about 'free cars, houses, holidays, cash' etc that you hear in the pub? Bollocks put out for the vulnerable and easily led to pass on. Give me one example. Just one.

At no point in the article is their employment status mentioned. Believe me, if they were unemployed, the Daily Mail would make a big thing about it, about how they are claiming benefits etc.

Therefore, you must conclude, that they are employed therefore paying taxes therefore contributing to society. So, what does that Daily Mail have against them? They aren't sponging off the state. They are working and paying taxes. What does the Daily Mail have against them?

Oh yes, they are foreign and look a bit brown. So, just xenophobia and racism then!

Absolutely Colonel- the Daily Mail is a nasty right wing rag which constantly attacks immigrants and the sex industry so I find it quite astonishing that this nasty rag is being quoted on this website. If the Mail were to say that today is Friday(it is at the time of writing) I'd have to look in my diary to check!

Hi Brutal Truth,

I'm not particularly left wing and I don't believe we should have open borders, I believe that immigration needs to be managed for economic as well as security reasons. My point is that I would never take at face value what a vile rag such as the Daily Mail has to say on immigration issues, or anything for that matter.
