I used to correspond w/ a young fellow from Udine (an American gridiron fan) whose family was Communist. I got the impression that they saw themselves as a bulwark against fascism--do you get that impression about Italian Communists??

Yes I do and I think that you are right. The Italians have never forgot fascism, Mussolini and Hitler.
