anyone remember those glorious scare-a-thons when they where kids ? the Quatermass ones were my faves, that scene where that bloke came out of that tank full of aliens all burnt up, scared the shit out of me, and what was that one in the london underground ?

Quatermass And The Pit. In spite of some laughable effects, Nigel Kneale's brilliant story still ahd the ability to shock.

"Gentlemen, we are the Martians."

Hammer had its moments, and some of them quite silly, but it did have an ability to scare as well. And the company kept Michael Ripper in regular work

Young people seem to be big on horror these days, as the endless cycle of dismal remakes proves. However, Hammer always made horror for a more encompassing, possibly more mature audience and their films generally had a more mature cast. True, with their name there'll be a fair amount of built-in interest in what they do, but if they're canny enough they'll realise there is a market for an update in their general approach, i.e. those that don't want to see a 23-yr old blue-eyed Quatermass and his voluptuous American assistant being chased by Ringu-inspired ghouls, which I think is what many are fearing.

If you are all referring to re-releasing the original Lee/ Cushing Hammer films, I agree that they are far too tame for Gen X & Y audiences.They are used to gore.

On this topic--anyone remember the entertaining 'The Fearless Vampire Killers'?? It was a Polanski film w/ his soon-wife Sharon Tate (drool, drool), & it did an excellent job of combining horror & comedy, a difficult thing to do.Polanski may be a perv, but he is a very good, & versatile, director.

Nigel Kneale didn't get any share of the money when the BBC sold the film rights of his Quatermass TV scripts to Hammer.
There's a very nice piece about him on the Hammer site, his Quatermass creation is recognized as being very instrumental in getting Hammer well established.
