Hi Jonone,

No not at all! I think I've maybe not come over as I intended to - what I meant is that whilst this type of barbarism has occured since time immemorial ,unfortunately, it's harder not to become emotional and affected by it when today's technology brings these horrors into sharp focus. Whereas in the past we'd have heard about these barbarities, to now actually see footage of baying crowds and terrorized victims makes it harder to not become affected. Many people would of course become affected without seeing graphic images as what's happened is obviously horrific and cannot be justified, although some may try to.
I was responding to an email from Lizard who remarked that his g/f was upset by the tragedy.

Ha ha!

Wrong again Wazza!

Asking a Victorian whether they think it would be immoral for a men to hold hands walking down the hight street, kissing eachother on a Sunday morning stroll, while the local children are being let out of Sunday school, and you may find that morals indeed are constantly evolving, as are laws. Thus: finicky.

Morals change from person to person, place to place, generation to generation. Morals -after all- are just rules of accepted behaviour at any given time within a certain culture, so culture and morals are closely linked.

It would -I'm sure- be deemed not only weird and illegal, but also immoral, to have your dead grandma stuffed in the fridge, ready for supper.

Some morality is pretty much constant, but behaviour and tolerance constantly change, which decides most moral/immorality.

Constant indeed..........tsk.

Sorry, I understand Naomi. It was kind of addressed more to Lizard who described his gf's response as 'heavy'. I'm not having a go at Lizard, but life is heavy sometimes and I don't think it's particularly healthy to cherry pick the 'nice' bits, just as it isn't healthy to dwell on the darkness, nevertheless I think you should acknowledge it and bear witness to people who are the victim of some awful circumstances.

I understand that you have an emotional response which is proportionate. My reply was as if to say 'That's depressing .. anyway, what's Paris Hilton doing?' which isn't, i'd suggest, a very adult response. I fully appreciate though that it's not your response.

Hi Jonone,

No problem-thanks for that and I understand the points you're making. It is important to try to keep some type of perspective and balance I agree, difficult though it maybe sometimes when it comes to the senseless violence and resulting loss of life we've been discussing.

morality - the degree of conformity of an idea, practice, etc.

moral - 1a concerned with goodness or badness of human character or behaviour, or with distinction between right and wrong. b concerned with accepted standards and rules of human behaviour.

Cultural acceptabilities are moralities Wazza!

Being a humble woodlouse, I may be confused though! !nuts!

Yes, thats why I posted the link Jon, I appreciate what Naomi said, and can see her point because my G/F is susceptible(sp) to reading stuff like this and dwelling on it, Not me! you dont need to tell me about heavy, I fully understand heavy- believe me.
