Michael Barrymore - wasn't he good !

Post by Guilbert »

I have been sorting out a spare room at home and found a box of old videos I had recorded.

One of them was the Royal Variety Show from 1993, and top of the bill was Michael Barrymore.

I was never a great fan at the time, but I have to say he was brilliant. He did about 15 minutes and it was a mixture of comedy, singing, and dancing.

He totally dominated the stage and really got the audience laughing and clapping, and totally on his side.

I know he has had his problems (many self inflicted) but there is no doubt he was an excellent performer.

The sad thing about watching the show was the people no longer with us - Harry Secombe, Roy Castle, Leslie Crowther and Maurice Gibb.

I think most of us liked him as a family entertainer, but with his 'problems' causing disgust and revulsion to family viewers in general, it was obvious it was all downhill after that.
Take away his headlines for the wrong reasons, and I still think he is, oooops, WAS a great comic

Brian Jones was drowned by a builder he 'sacked' earlier that week over shoddy workmanship.
Because of Brians frequent brushes with the police regarding his drug taking, it was put down to drugs that he drowned...........and brushed under the carpet so to speak.
The cowboy builder did confess to this on his deathbed, but the old bill couldn't be arsed to have another inquiry.

What a mug he was though to throw it all away!!

I've seen some of his old Strike It Rich shows on challenge recently and
he was so good with the contestants - not afraid to send himself up or
poke fun at some of the prizes. The old dears on these shows loved him
and would have done anything for him back then

He must have been one of the highest earners contracted ITV at that stage
Good entertainer that appealled to all ages at that time but as you say
his self inflicted problems brought about his downfall

No way back for him now - how he must wish he could turn back the clock
