Ah, the physics:

A bullet fired straight ahead will be in "freefall". In other words, no matter how fast it travels, it will still hit the ground as though simply dropped to the ground.

Actually a bullets trajectory all depends on the quality/length of the barrel, weight/aerodynamics of the casing, and wind/humidity levels.

In high humidity, the bullet fired slows down considerably quicker, which means gravity pulls it back to Earth faster. This wouldn't affect the dropped bullet so much as it's velocity is nowhere near as fast, and the humidity wouldn't alter the drag affect so much.

Ah yes, but in this case the gun is "pointing straight ahead", which means that the sights (whatever elevation they are set at) are simply not being used.
