I'd go with your top two without question and in that order. I'd also throw into the mix 'Village of the Damned', ' Alien' (if you classify it as sci-fi) and ' Blade Runner'.

'Village of the Damned'.
I remember seeing that and 'Quatermass And The Pit' one Christmas back in the early seventies. They both gave me nightmares for ages. :)

I still prefer the original Village Of The Damned compared to the John Caprenter 90's remake.

Alien is still one of my favourite movies. It's one movie that's stood the test of time.

1 2001: A Space Odyssey (not one for casual viewing, I'll admit, but it's still about the only film that bothers with good physics and doesn't have engines booming in a vacuum)

2 Blade Runner (I'm awaiting the spanking new director's cut due out on DVD later this year; but will accept any version without the tacked on happy ending)

3 Forbidden Planet (just good, for goodness sake)

4 Quatermass And The Pit (a fusion of sci-fi and horror, with some of the most wonderful ideas from a writer, the late and great Nigel Kneale---but shame about some of the effects)

5 Village Of The Damned (creepy kids---including Martin Stephens from The Innocents---and George Sanders; how can you go wrong?)

Honourable mentions: Alien, Aliens, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Metropolis, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Time After Time, The Day The Earth Caught Fire, The Quatermass Experiment.

Omitting certain obvious titles that transcend the genre ('E.T.', 'Jurassic Park', 'Star Wars', '2001' ),I'd say in no particular order:

'Boy & His Dog'
'Blade Runner'
'Terminator Pt. 2'
'Alien'
'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (1950s version, tho the 70s remake is worth a look too)
