Fair point. 1984 doesn't quite have science at its narrative core as some SF purists insist on, but it did show the powers that be using advances in science/technology as a form of control and empowerment (and thus the effects of science on society). The point being that technolgy does not come with any moral core and thus can be used/abused accordingly by those that control it. A standard SF trope, perhaps, but, back in the day, Orwell's warning was fierce, and seems increasingly potent today.

btw - yes, Brazil was the better version of it too.

I meant to give Solaris (original version) a worthy mention. Like 2001, you really have to be in the mood for it, though.

Silent Running had a major plot problem for me. If all Earth's remaining forests were being kept in storage in space, what is being used for oxygen on the planet?

Contact had its moments, too.

You're absolutely right about 'Silent Running' being full of plot flaws - I mean, for starters, why are the forests in orbit around Saturn, rather than the Moon, where you could take advantage of sunlight and proximity to Earth?

Even though he was too saintly, I really liked the isolation of Freeman (Dern) and his crazed persona. The slowness of the movie, and the great ending, are also positives for me. Basically, I like it enough not to unpick it too much.

I seem to recall 'Colossus' as being a made-for-TV movie--quite good, & scary. I almost listed it myself. I think I later read the book, one of a trilogy or something.
