A snippet of BM on the radio this lunchtime: "Ring 999 in Bradford and you get the Bengal Lancers."

I had a good laugh at that, but then had to listen to Arthur Smith pulling the old pc/altenative comedy trick of trying to dictate what we can and can't laugh at (meaning: you can't laugh at BM, but you can laugh at my stuff). He was on Newsnight last night doing much the same.

Arthur, if you're reading this, you're more dangerous than the supposed racism of BM could ever be.

RIP Bernie. Saw him a couple of times, seriously funny. Could handle hecklers better than anyone else I've seen. Was very well thought of in the showbiz world and very generous to upcoming artists and charities.

He loved Man City and took the piss out of them big time. "Richard Branson has been asked to sponsor Man City. Mr Branson responded by saying he couldn't have Virgin on the shirts of a team that got fucked every Saturday!!"

Have you seen the Steptoe and son episode where Harold want to act
in the play Lffe of a Bengal lancer??
His dad comes out with the line that there will be 'more turbans in the
audience than on the stage!!'

I find this funny and I'm from Bradford but I don't consider laughing
at this makes me a racist - just a funny line

I do wonder if they will cut this line if they show this episode again as
someone said on the radio the other day that a Porridge episode had
been edited where Fletch says Lukewarm is one of those
(or words to that effect)

Alexei Sayle has an article on Manning and his ilk in the Indie today. The piece, a fairly nasty and lengthy bit of character assasination for an audience who largely ignored Manning and co., ends thus: "..he was just a halfway decent comic with a horrible act."

Pots and kettles, Mr Sayle? Still, at least people found Bernard genuinely funny. He was never fashionable, and thus never had to endure an audience pretending to find him funnier than he actually was, something which must resonate with many of today's comedy turns perhaps.

RIP, big fella.
