why are british dvd titles so bloody expensive ie. ben dover?
i've bought raw, vivid titles for less than a tenner including shipping from the states but brit titles cost treble that. why?

My guess is that the reason is this:
In the UK there are only about 90 shops that have a license to sell r18 porn.
This means the shops have less competition in the area. As you know less competition is more you can charge.
OK, the shops have to pay 40k
for a licence, but then again so do black and white cabs.
If there were lots more shops you would find the price will drop.
The question you should also ask is how much do the shops pay in the first place for the dvd's and vids, and I bet its not a lot.
Do not also forget that some shops buy the dvd's back off people and re-sell them.
Though you can pick up your local paper and find some chap selling vids for ?5.
I was chatting to one guy who was in a wheelchair. He had three friends who copyed the tapes all day long for him, he said he paid them each 40k a year. He bought the tapes in bulk (about 40p each).
What he did was have a wide screen tv pluged into a vid that only could play and not record. People could see the films before they bought them.
He has been raided a few times, but he only kept a few tapes at his home, so when the polics raded, they could only take a few.
As he was in a wheelchair and the judge never convicted as to send him to joal would have cost a fortune, not to mention all the speacel equipment that was needed.
So he is still selling (the last time I heard), he advertises in the Sport and other papers. He even boasted that he sells to several top football players (even has signed posters from them).
I am saying this because as long as shops sell for such high prices you will get somone selling them for a few pounds.

Are these 18 films are r18?
I say this as you cannot sell r18 films over the net, you have to buy them from shops that have a license, and you have to gfo into the shop to pick it up, they are not allowed to post it to you.
Though, to be honest I wonder how long it will be, before websites start to break the rules and sell r18 films. Lets face it, only a few years back lots of shops said to heck with it and opened on a Sunday, within months the goverment backed down and the law changed.
I do think that in less than 10 years pyou will be able to buy r18 over the internet legally.

....And what do the porn producers get from the guy in the wheelchair who is duplicating their material ilegally....bugger all....giving them less income to spend on new productions therefore having to charge their customers more for the tapes they DO sell by legal methods........so who gains by that?????

What I am saying is that there are tons of people doing the same thing. Pick up any paper and you can see adds doing the same thing.
Some place adverts as "I am selling my porn collection ?5 a tape", but when in comes down to it, the guy is kicking out tons of tapes.
As I said before the "porn producers" may be selling the vids for next to nothing. Its the shops that make the profit.
I heard that shops were buying the tapes for ?10, then sell them for ?40 or more.
As long as they charge huge you will find tons of people flogging copied porn.
I would guess that 70% of porn in uk homes is copied if not more. Unless prices come down, then there will be even more people selling copied porn, and now that dvd writters are cheaper I bet there will soon be lots of copied dvd porn.
Just look how many people are now buying copied cd's. And the people buying copied cd's are not poor, I have seen gp's lawers and others buy these things.
