Doesn't matter whether he's needed----he's a striker, and they tend to get headlines, and headlines assure the fans that things are going well.

Not sure how many strikers Rangers and Celtic have got, but there are going to be quite a few arses with splinter wounds next season.

Keane, Berbatov and Defoe, all with a season-long run in the side are 25-goals-a-season strikers. IMO, they all possess more flair than Bent.

So, indeed, why Darren Bent? !confused!

However, his goalscoring prowess in undisputed- he could get 30-odd this season, who knows? I think for his move to work, and to keep bigger names happy (unless they are offloaded first), he may have to be the centrepiece of a three-man strikeforce.

To my knowledge, Keane and Defoe are very much up for grabs.

Moyes of Everton should go for Defoe........ as should West Ham.

Keane would be a great signing for Newcastle.

A good striker that would have fit in better at Man Utd and the way they play. Sort of another Saha that isn't in the treatment room as much.

Dunno if he'll fit into Tottenham's style as easily but he'll still be useful. Defoe isn't liked by Martin Jol, and I can see him changing clubs before the start of the season, or in January.

Bent's strength to us is his versatility. He can play with any of our forwards, much like Berbatov.

Jol prefers little 'n' large and the first choice teaming of Berba and Keano got better and better last season. The fat sulker Mido is on his way out, leaving Bent to come in and give Berba a rest, or to play with Defoe against less strong opposition. I could also see his goal-scoring instinct posing a lot of problems for other teams if played alongside Berba, a forward who creates even more than he scores. We could play Berba and Bent up front, with Keano behind them in the hole, and Zokora playing deep defensive midfield. It's the kind of attacking flair that very few teams could withstand.

As to Bent's price, it's a structured deal and although it's very steep I think we're banking on the fact that he's scored bagfuls at every level in very poor teams. In those terms, he's less of a gamble than foreign imports. His youth also means that he's still got room to improve and therefore accrue more value. If he scores at his usual rate this season I think he'll be seen as a shrewd longterm investment.

All of our strikers are on longterm contracts, except for Defoe who only has two years left. He's the least important to the team but I can't see where else he'd go. If he wants more football he can forget any of the current top four. I suspect he'll renew his contract, leaving us with the best strike squad, bar none, in the Premiership.

Fourth is ours for the taking. United, CFC and 'Pool will scrap it out for the top three. No matter who Arse buys the Henry factor is what has kept them above the chasing pack. Without him and his totemic value, I think they're going to find themselves in a real scrap to qualify for Europe...in either competition. The only player they have who's a class apart is Fabregas. Be interesting to see if he's got what it takes when they start losing games.
