Given the vast distances involved (see The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy definition of space), it would need something incredible for other species to visit this planet: the infinite improbability drive, a Tardis, or "folding space" (as described in Dune). The main hope in recent years has been wormholes in the space fabric that could help us travel vast distances in the twinkling of an eye, but all this is way beyond us now---and for centuries to come.

Life exists elsewhere. Finding it and reaching it---or it finding and reaching us---remains the big challenge.

As for Roswell, US military experiments in my opinion----though I liked Deep Space Nine's take on it, with Quark, Rom and Nog as the Roswell aliens.

does that depend on how you define time as it is a man made invention!!!

this could get heavy lol

14). The head of USAF holds a press conference denying the previous "story".

15). The mayor of Roswell at that time breaks his silence and says he and some of the town's elder statesmen saw "something mighty unusal that day!".

16). The USAF produce black and white fuzzy pictures claiming to be of the site on that day. This is 40 years after the event.

17). Ufology is formed by those who disagree with the US government claiming a huge cover-up by the military.

18). The President stands up and catergorically denies everything the Ufologists claim.

19). A resident of Roswell, in his 90's now, says in a sworn statement that he helped the military despose the bodies of "the little green men". And he claims that he was threaten with a "serious punishment" if he ever spoke of this!

And on and on.

Lol, very deep.

Distance/Time=Speed

Distance exists as long as there is space. Time and speed are used to measure distance, distance and time to measure speed, and speed and distance to measure time.

but time exists even if we stand still, eliminating distance and speed, I hear you say! Not true, because everything else has movement relative to you. Even if you do not move....ever, as long as particles & atoms etc are zipping past you, you are zipping past them, and so you cannot escape time.

Now, if we could freeze-frame everything. Every atom and surrounding electron, even every light particle, and the gravitational pull, speed would be entirely eliminated from the equation, making time non existent.

Distance would still exists, but it would be irrelevant if nothing moved.

That's my thought on it anyway!

pretty good, let me throw this into the mix to confuse things further

Time was a unique concept in Newtonian mechanics. In general relativity,
the word has at least three distinct meanings:

Coordinate time x^0: One component of the spacetime coordinate x^mu.

Parameter time t: Parameterizes points on the observer's trajectory.

Proper time tau: The number of clock ticks measured by the observer.

To see that these things are different, we note that they transform
differently. x^0 transforms as a component of a vector under
diffeomorphisms, t transforms under reparametrizations of the
observer's trajectory, and tau, being a measurable number, is invariant
under all relevant groups.

Blurring the distinction between these concepts, which is natural since
the same word is used for all three, is a constant source of confusion.

!confused!!confused!!confused!

Which points to the conclusion that time, like speed, is variable and depends on it's relativity to the person measuring it.

My brain hurts.

All I know (well, have been told) is that time did not exist before the big bang. All measurements, all matter born in that one instant. The big question, though, is what caused the big bang.

not strictly true Carac, that is a theory which is being challanged all the time (grr that pesky time again!!)

Researchers from Penn State University in the US have used mathematical equations to disprove Einstein?s theory that the Big Bang was the beginning of everything. The Big Bang, they say, was one almighty explosion in a series of explosions that each created a new universe. They have dubbed their theory the Big Bounce.

more detail here, if you really want your brain to hurt

not disagreeing with you, just showing how complex a subject time is, discussion getting a bit beyond my experience now so i've chopped this from a site - hope it messes with your head as much as it did mine!

Time is simply the separation of events; or the interval
between events. The only thing that has really changed about man's
comprehension of time (since Einstein's Special Relativity Theory) that may
inspire you to even ask the question of its definition, is that its length
of intervals are dependent on relative frames of reference such as velocity
and gravity. This would imply that the same separation of events may appear
to be greater or lesser dependent on observers relative reference frame.
This view is contrary to the previous Newtonian view that time flows in
absolute intervals independent of the physical universe. So you see, to
state that time is a property of the universe would be an incomplete
conclusion. I would say that time is a universal phenomenon who's length of
intervals are dependent upon relative conditions (gravity/velocity). To
understand why this is so, you should refer to a good book on Special
Relativity, as understanding these concepts is difficult without a firm
understanding of the behavior of light in a vacuum (of all things) and how
this factors into experience.

Since I never managed to get my physics O level, I'll remain proudly ignorant and leave you experts to it, Diplo. Thanks, though.
